Just curious to know if anything changed after you downloaded.
I got the e-mail from SBC, I haven't installed XP SP2. That comes through windows update.
I received the same message but have not attempted to download the MSN update or related ones yet. Do you know what the pros and cons are for the MSN SP update? Not sure I even want to go down that road.
FWIW-
No email for me as of yet.
I think I will wait a bit before downloading the serv. pack though.
SBC sucks ass.
I wanted DSL. I asked if I could get DSL in my city. They said Oh, yeah I just did the tests and your number fits for service. Sweet!
I was pumped up ready to get rid of dial up. I had to switch my current phone service which was fine. I got my package of wireless modem stuff in the mail. I hooked it all up. Well 15 or so days went by and still no service. I was on the phone every three days. Customer service was always nice though.
Well on the last day a SBC field tech called and told me that DSL service was not available in my area. I was too far away for service. I was pissed. They over sold and under delivered.
I am now going back to my old phone service. Well I have to have the DSL codes taken off my line for my new phone service. I have been waiting for three weeks for them to do this. I had to call back today for another removal.
The phone company I want to use says they have at least thirty customers in the same position as me. Most times they have to call the FCC to force SBC to have the codes removed. This is BS.
So I hope all who use SBC never plan to leave them.
And no I don't have the update. :)
Most reports I've seen say that SP2 hasn't affected anything. There are, of course, the programs Microsoft lists, but many have already been patched.
My suggestion... wait a couple of months before upgrading. It's an important upgrade, and shouldn't be ignored. The software problems come on the part the software companies themselves, not Microsoft. However, I'd wait for an SP2a or similar update. If you have a firewall and an antivirus program, you're already doing your part.
My XP Pro system is working pretty darn OK right now, so I am going to wait for the dust to settle on this one. In my experience w/Micro$oft, I have found that if you are writing code for their OS and an upgrade breaks your application, then you need to update your application. They are always right. Once everyone understands that things will go a lot smoother.
So, I will await WinXP SP3 until I patch my system.
There are alternatives, you know...
