Poland's first Olympic swimming champion Otylia Jedrzejczak said she plans to sell her gold medal to raise money for sick children. A household name in Poland, Jedrzejczak has won three of the central European country's four medals so far in Athens, including the only gold - for Wednesday's 200 metres butterfly.
"After returning home I plan to auction off my gold medal and donate all of the money to children afflicted by leukaemia," she told heavyweight daily Rzeczpospolita, which like other Polish newspapers splashed her success across its front page.
"It will be difficult to part with it, but...that is what my heart tells me," said the 20-year-old from an industrial town in the Silesia region of southern Poland, adding that she had been moved by reading a book about a boy with the disease.
Before she parted with her medal she would have a die cast made.
Regards, Ivan
I'm sending this to a friend of mine who lost a son to leukemia. The young lady truly is a champion.
I hope this story gets out and some gazillionaire sees it, purchases the medal, and then turns around and gives it back to her. She is doing a wonderful thing, but I dearly hope she gets to keep her medal too!
Send it to Bill Gates... As much as I dislike the man, he contributes more to charity in a year than most people make in a decade or two.
