Former NBC network news magazine anchor Jane Pauley reveals she's bipolar in her autobiography.

Jane Pauley

Pauley writes in "Skywriting: A Life Out of the Blue," coming out Tuesday, that she takes lithium to control her mood swings.

She said the problem started in 2001 when she came down with a bad case of hives. She took steroids and had a rare reaction that set off the bipolar disorder.

Pauley said she spent nearly three weeks in the hospital under an assumed name.

Excerpts of "Skywriting" have been published in People magazine.

Pauley, 53, begins hosting her new syndicated talk show, "The Jane Pauley Show," later this month.

So when will Doonesbury go "inside Pauley's brain"...
(as Trudeau did with Reagan...back in the 1980s).

I've always heard that Charles J. Guiteau was "a disgruntled office-seeker." Can you imagine where the country would be today if he'd been just a little bit more gruntled? I mean, you take a fellow's gruntlitude away from him, and what's left except political assassination?

What is quercetin? I have taken predinesone several times for severe reactions to poison ivy. Will p. do that?

"What is quercetin?"

A natural non-toxic anti-histamine and anti-oxidant. It's great for all sorts of allergies and asthma. Found naturally in onions, brocolli, and apples. Available over-the-counter in any vitamin store.

The average American doctor prescribes what is pushed by the drug companies, not what is safest and most effective.

I took prednisone for 7 years due to ulcerative colitis. I have never ever heard of this side effect. I also have a brother who is bi polar, and I have never heard of steroids triggering this. I did read an article once that stated that cocaine and/or serious emotional trauma (death of a loved one) could trigger bipolar disorder in a person who was already predisposed to getting it.

I hope a doctor responds to this. I'd like to know for sure, one way or another.

Why should we be knowing her medical history?

Really, who cares? Unless she did something for which apologoes or explanations are in order, why would we want or need to know this?

I'm becoming way to cynical in my old age. When I see this type of headline I now think, "what's she selling?". Sure enough, she's flogging a biography. This story will also get her on Oprah and all the other sob sister talk shows to generate more buzz. I must admit, it's a nice safe admission - not like some sort of scandal like; the night I lost my virginity or Gary's kinky sexual demands. When she was on the Today Show, I always thought she was bright and cute but when I learned that she married Trudeau, I lost a lot of respect for her intelligence.
