If this is the age of specialization, why are we mainstreaming?
The superintendent of schools in San Diego came from Brooklyn and is under massive fire from teachers unions as he is trying to teach teachers to provide individualized attention. The teachers participating in this program say that they have learned to become better teachers.

Actually, parents got together and donated what they could to hire a teacher. The teacher took turns staying with each family, thus creating the first really useful PTA, and providing free room and board to the teacher. Oddly enough, even the poorest could affort to contribute enough to hire a teacher. I daresay the education in a one room school house was as good as you get today in the school factories.
