Once upon a time parents assumed the responsibility of educating their own children.

I totally agree with you. Parents used to assume responsibility for educating their children. Now they want a free baby sitter, educator, psychologist, nurturer, etc. etc. Even if one sends their kids to public school, the attitude shouldn't be, oh let the school worry about my kids. Schools are simply a mirror of what's going on at home. What good they can do is limited, and considering the culture of other students who are the product of divorce, drugs, etc. peers can be a serious negative influence. Be prepared for battle if you're sending your kids to public school.
