Friendly Fire: The Birth of an Anti-Kerry Ad
New York Times ^ | August 20, 2004 | KATE ZERNIKE and JIM RUTENBERG

Posted on 08/20/2004 3:33:33 PM PDT by don-o

After weeks of taking fire over veterans' accusations that he had lied about his Vietnam service record to win medals and build a political career, Senator John Kerry shot back yesterday, calling those statements categorically false and branding the people behind them tools of the Bush campaign.

His decision to take on the group directly was a measure of how the group that calls itself Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has catapulted itself to the forefront of the presidential campaign. It has advanced its cause in a book, in a television advertisement and on cable news and talk radio shows, all in an attempt to discredit Mr. Kerry's war record, a pillar of his campaign.

How the group came into existence is a story of how veterans with longstanding anger about Mr. Kerry's antiwar statements in the early 1970's allied themselves with Texas Republicans. Mr. Kerry called them "a front for the Bush campaign" - a charge the campaign denied.

A series of interviews and a review of documents show a web of connections to the Bush family, high-profile Texas political figures and President Bush's chief political aide, Karl Rove. Records show that the group received the bulk of its initial financing from two men with ties to the president and his family - one a longtime political associate of Mr. Rove's, the other a trustee of the foundation for Mr. Bush's father's presidential library. A Texas publicist who once helped prepare Mr. Bush's father for his debate when he was running for vice president provided them with strategic advice. And the group's television commercial was produced by the same team that made the devastating ad mocking Michael S. Dukakis in an oversized tank helmet when he and Mr. Bush's father faced off in 1988

I'm shocked. Shocked! That Republicans would give money to an organization that is clearly opposed to President Bush's opponent.

DemocRATS would NEVER engage in such tactics.

hmmm....just in time for the weekend talk shows.

Does the mainstream media realize they are ALSO under scrutiny here? Lashing the remants of their credibility to John Fraud Kerry's boat could really hurt them.

See this about John O'Neill. Written back in April.

Kerry could not hold a candle to someone like O'Neill 30 years ago and he still is way out of his league intellectually with O'Neill today. Maybe Kerry needs a smarter lawyer than O'Neill. Hey, how about David Boise? HAHAHAHAHA!

A Texas publicist who once helped prepare Mr. Bush's father for his debate when he was running for vice president provided them with strategic advice.

This is as earth-shattering as disclosing that Barabara Striesand "had ties to the Clinton family" and donates money to anti-Bush organizations and that Democrat publicists often work with more than one Liberal client throughout the course of their career. < /sarcasm>

So, we already know that political ads cost money to produce and run and are not aired on TV as public service announcements. How about focusing on the documentation of the charges, New York Times?

This is another HIT piece by the liberal NY slimes. They are trying to make a connection of the swift vets ad directly to bush. Bush isn't that stupid but the media is going to push this to make it look like bush is behind the ads. More left wing bias from the left wing media.

Just watched CBS evening news. They weren't nearly as one-sided as I expected. (Dan was absent) This ad is going to be difficult for the Old Media to attack, that's why they are attacking Bush's connection.

But Rove is a pro's pro. He'd never permit any coordination. And O'Neill is a living legend. He'd never take a chance on coordinating. (Yes I've known both for decades)

The group that calls itself The New York Times has a far larger web of connections to the DNC than the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has to the Bush family.

"Does the mainstream media realize they are ALSO under scrutiny here? Lashing the remants of their credibility to John Fraud Kerry's boat could really hurt them."

The media has definitely tied its fate to the Kerry campaign, which explains the desperation the Kerry camp and the media is beginning to manifest.

Now I know why the NY Times has not had any time to investigate the allegations of the Swift Boat Vets. They've been too busy digging up dirt on the Vets themselves and seeing if Karl Rove's Aunt's friend's 5th cousin's hairdresser ever cut John O'Neil's hair in 1988.

Texans apparently have less constitutional rights than the newly freed Iraqis.
How dare any Texan contribute money to an organization or have an opinion !!
Next, the Democrats and NYT will be demanding that Texas lose the right to vote, because they live in the same state as George Bush.

I saw a post...Kerry has filed a complaint with FEC against Swift Boat Vets and is making a serious attempt to get the book banned. Free Speech is only for liberal after all.

Sure. But remember, if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes truth. And our "independent" press likes to repeat these lies every chance they get.
