I've been using a variant of this for a year now to produce
picture cakes. You can use any image you want, run it through a software program, then print it on a standard Canon wide-format printer using special edible inkjet cartridges and paper.
The image comes out very clear - just like a photograph printed on paper (except this tastes a lot better). Transferring the image from the paper to the frosting on the cake is fairly delicate work, but I've had good results so far.
