National ID seen in 9/11 panel plan
Washington Times ^ | Sunday, August 22, 2004 | By Shaun Waterman

The September 11 commission's recommendation for federal standards of identification documents such as driver's licenses and birth certificates is tantamount to the introduction of a national ID card system "through the back door," some lawmakers believe.

The commission stopped short of actually recommending the introduction of national ID cards but did say that the fight against terrorism required greater consistency and security of state-issued identification documents.

National ID's will do nothing but make poeple easier to control.

Lets take illegals and felons who vote illegally, they get away with it because states do not check ID's of people in the voting booths. A new ID that does not get checked will do nothing to prevent this.

Huh? I really don't understand your logic.

I am 100% for a national ID number. Law abiding citizens already have one, their social security number.

And those of us who travel overseas have our passport number.

And those of us who drive have our driver's license number.

I only see upside as a national ID card provide the means to identify and prevent illegals from taking advantage our our country, like VOTING for DEMONS.

I welcome the cons if anyone has a reasoned explanation.

You don't even need an address in Texas to vote, not even an ID. That won't change if we get national ID's.

Talk to your legislature. In Kansas I have to show a photo ID before I can vote.

Texas doesn't even require an address... liberals are registering illegals and the homeless like crazy. There have been zero ads run in Texas BTW. Texas might be closer this year than people expect.

Perhaps you are ready to stand in line and get your own personal RFID chip.

Why do I, a law-abiding citizen, have to carry ID so I can prove I am **NOT** a criminal or a terrorist or an illegal alien or [fill_in_the_blank]??

What did *I* do that is so terrible that I have to carry ID?

Why should *I* be inconvenienced in any way because **SOMEBODY ELSE** can't behave themself?

Are you going to argue that I should put up with it just because the Government (all bow) can't figure out any way of dealing with terrorists and criminals other than to make all the INNOCENT people carry ID?? Where is the justice in *that*??

Why is it better to make **ME** carry ID, when I haven't done anything wrong, than it would be to, for instance, put a visible mark on everyone who HAS done something wrong and demand that THEY carry ID?

Why do you want to punish ME along with the criminals??

Making everyone carry ID is the ultimate form of socialism; hammering everyone down to the lowest common denominator. Some people screw up, so everyone has to suffer, "For The Good Of Society" (On your knees, scum...).

Actually, I am all for that. I'll take my in my upper arm under the skin.

Now, will you make a reasoned reply instead of a Kerry-esque reply?

Nobody said you had to CARRY your ID. Straw man argument, I see.

You only would need your ID if you wanted to do something that SHOULD require an ID.

LIKE VOTING.

or GETTING FREE SOCIAL SERVICES.

Are you really against that?

You must prefer the status quo, where illegals run amok, voting illegally and consuming our social services illegally, just so you won't be inconvenienced.

Dare I say -- selfish, aren't you.

We already have lots of mismatched ID. A national ID card would work wonders, especially if it were a requirement to be hired, vote, etc.

A con would be the fact that it is just another law.It will be administered by the same imcompetents and/or crooks who administer the current laws regarding identification.Witness drivers license issuance scandals practically everywhere at one time or another.

People in power attempt to stay in power by one important means-crowd control. If the crowd-us-ever really gets out of control they perceive a much bigger threat than from a world full of islamoterrorists.

Why is that a "con?" It is a "tool" for enforcement.

Some enforcement agencies may not use it properly, but it also would provide and "audit" trail for actions taken by illegals, such as voting in NY and FL, as on another thread.

Where is the downside risk?

Most law abiding citizens are already in law-enforcement databases; only the shadowy illegals are outside of these databases.

Hold it. I see both sides here. The REAL point IMO is the fact that even when we know illegals are here, and are getting stuff, and even when we catch them...we let them go anyway.

SO..I think the clammer for an ID on the part of the gubmint is extreeeemely suspect in light of it's already PC approach to illegals, even after they're found filming dams and bridges. [Yes I can give you proof in several recent stories where such illegals were let go or deported to try again]

Until the gubmint gets serious about going after the foreigners, they won't get me to consider giving up one iota of freedom for their hypocritical argument.

Sorry, it's the neocon in me ;)

No I prefer to have my privacy, and a gov't ID is nothing more than registration. My Drivers license is plenty of proof for voting, and I don't use "free social services" I acutally work for what I own. I have not even collect unemployment during periods between jobs, I got a menial job until I found a better one.

Now as for your argument about not carrying it, take a look at something as simple as seat belt laws. First it was you must have lap belts installed but yout don't have to use them, then it was, lap belts and shoulder belts, then it became "well it is mandatory to use them, but we won't stop to check, only if you are stopped and don't have it on will we ticket you. NOw they actually have seat belt road stops where they stop everyone in a given area to see if they are wearing their seat belts.

Socialist Security numbers were never to be used as ID, the card evven used to be stamped in red letters "Not for Identification Purposes." Now you can't even get something as simple as a drivers license without it.

It would not be long at all before the government decided that you must have the card with you wherever you go outside the U.S. then inside the U.S.. How huge of a step would it be to make a law that says you have to have it to buy anything the government deems as dangerous, say a gun, (de facto registration), or even fertilizer or aspirin, because you can make bombs with both those ingredients.

As for illegals, they don't have standard ID now, what makes you think that they will abide by any "national ID laws" How would you enforce such laws? The problem with illegals it that the government does not enforce the laws on the books now.

Our government has a unique way of using these "harmless" and "beneficial" laws against it's own citizenry. If you want to live in a socialist utopia where everyone has govt ID and has access to free socialist services go to England or Canada, but don't foist this crap on those of us who don't want it.
