Now comes paid volunteers, an oxymoron at its worst, which was recently created by a state agency. Simply stated, nonprofit organizations throughout California could be devastated if volunteers have to be paid.
By definition, a volunteer works, well, voluntarily. For free! They do not want, nor do they expect, to get paid. Seems fairly obvious. However, according to a 2003 legal interpretation of state labor law by the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), charity organizations are now required to pay volunteers, if they are to accept state funding for programs.

That's why my wife and I took our six-figure combined income and moved to New Hampshire. California still sent us registration renewal requests for our cars, six months later. It was delightful to be able to tell them to go pound sand.
Only thing worse would be to get "fired" from a volunteer position.
Yep, I abandoned CA almost 10 years ago - sold our company and started another one in WA. CA tried to extort income taxes from me for the period *after* I'd moved and sold the house. Screw them.
