Give volunteers their 'jobs' back

Jumbo shrimp. Steel wool. Original copy. Thunderous silence. Oxymorons at their finest.

Now comes paid volunteers, an oxymoron at its worst, which was recently created by a state agency. Simply stated, nonprofit organizations throughout California could be devastated if volunteers have to be paid.

By definition, a volunteer works, well, voluntarily. For free! They do not want, nor do they expect, to get paid. Seems fairly obvious. However, according to a 2003 legal interpretation of state labor law by the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), charity organizations are now required to pay volunteers, if they are to accept state funding for programs.

Sounds like a back door way to increase the size of government. The "volunteers" become de facto employees of the government.

Screw Big Stupid Government. At all levels.

Ignore them, revile them, laugh at them. Just don't obey them.

Any tyranny, if reduced to mocking laughter and irrelevence, will collapse.

Tyranny, if deprived of its sustenance, will collapse.

That's why my wife and I took our six-figure combined income and moved to New Hampshire. California still sent us registration renewal requests for our cars, six months later. It was delightful to be able to tell them to go pound sand.

Only thing worse would be to get "fired" from a volunteer position.

Yep, I abandoned CA almost 10 years ago - sold our company and started another one in WA. CA tried to extort income taxes from me for the period *after* I'd moved and sold the house. Screw them.
