Dole Defends Swiftees in Call From Kerry
NewsMax.com ^ | 8/23/04 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 08/23/2004 2:03:39 PM PDT by kattracks

Presidential candidate John Kerry telephoned former Sen. Bob Dole Monday morning to complain about Dole's demand a day earlier that he apologize to Vietnam veterans for protesting the war, the one-time Republican presidential candidate revealed Monday afternoon.

"John Kerry called me this morning, which surprised me," Dole told radio host Sean Hannity. "He said he was very disappointed, we'd been friends. I said John, we're still friends, but [the Swiftvets] have first amendment rights, just as your people have first amendment rights.

Dole told Kerry, "I'm not trying to stir anything up, but I don't believe everyone of these people who have talked about what happened are Republican liars.

"And very frankly, Bush is my guy, and I'm tired of people on your side calling him everything from a coward to a traitor to everything - a deserter."

Dole said he urged Kerry, "Why don't you call George Bush today and say, 'Mr. President, let's stop all this stuff about the National Guard and Vietnam - and let's talk about the issues."

Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."

But the Republican war hero shot back, "You don't have to. You've got all the so-called mainstream media, plus you've got MoveOn.org. and all these other groups that have spent millions and millions of dollars trying to tarnish Bush's image."

"Don't tell me you don't know what some of these people are doing," he told Kerry.

"Everybody like quiet heroes," Dole added, saying he told Kerry, "John, everybody knows you were in Vietnam and the less you say about it, the better."

Dole said he tried to end the tense conversation cordially by telling Kerry, "I wish you good luck, up to a point."

Is this getting twisted as a positive for Kerry?

I am listening to Bob Kerrey right now.

Bob Dole was probably better in that phone call than his entire '96 campaign.

And you can bet Bob Dole speaks for a LOT of WWII vets. President Bush ought to get ol' Bobby to address some of these older gentlemen and gentlewomen of the World War II generation...he could pick up a good number of their votes.

"Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."

"Delusional?"

No, he's never had to spend his own dime on anything.

Excellent, screw Matthews.

Pinch me please-I must be dreaming!

Don't pinch yourself.....you aren't dreaming. :-) I've thought I was dreaming a few times lately while watching Wolfie. LOL! He seems to be coming down hard on Kerry and his cronies. First he came down HARD on Tad Devine (Kerry's campaign strategist) Friday afternoon, and he's spoken to Bob Dole twice now.

Bob pretty much said the same things on the phone as in the article on this thread. The good thing about it is that the lefties don't read Newsmax but they watch CNN. This way, THEY got to hear what Bob had to say. hehehe!

It's just MHO but I get the feeling Wolfie's rooting for the Swifties. I could be dead-wrong; it's just the feeling I get from the questions he asks.

Gotta shut the computer down.....storm heading this way.

Did anyone see Chad Clanton on John Gibson's show? Where do the Dems. find these guys? You just wish you could be left in a room with them for a few minutes. My husband is getting really close to putting me in a rubber room. He walks around saying "what did you say". I'm not talking to him I'm screaming at the Tv or the radio. Their talking points are so out in left field. They NEVER answer a question and start every sentence with "Well, Bush.......". I'm going to need solitude after the election.

kerry: eight points to live by (and one tip for free):

1. Don't spit into the wind.

2. Don't bet it all on drawing that fourth ace.

3. Don't tug on Superman's cape.

4. Don't lie about or attempt to embelish your own sorry four month military record.

5. Don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger.

6. Don't demean, belittle, or berate your fellow veterans - tho what you did militarily was little better than a simple boot camp.

7. Don't give aide and comfort to the enemy - again!

And most important of all....

8. Don't mess around with a real war veteran.

Free tip: Loose the Missus!

Bush's comments about Kerry are not direct praise of Kerry. Bush doesn't say that HE is proud of Kerry's service. He said that KERRY -should be- (maybe he's not?) proud of his service. Damning faint praise on examination, but sounds great at first blush.

Exactly! His statement is just like his speech to Hitlery and TheBentOne, Impeached42, when their "portraits" were revealed at the White House. He didn't say much about the Clintons, but he found a very teeny tiny bit to praise, and said a lot of it. Bush even got ol' Sink Stainer laughing a lot.

Yes in the same sense that he doesn't "own" an SUV...it merely belongs to the "family".

Keryy hasn't "spent one dime attacking President Bush" he's merely spent the DNC's money doing it.

I heard Dole retell the tale on Hannity this afternoon. It's real and it's accurately quoted.

The next time the Vietnamby Pamby calls someone crying about the SBVFT ads-
will somebody ask Kerry when he's going to apologize to President Bush for calling him a deserter and AWOL ???

"Gore Defends Home Turf As Bush Concedes Mistakes"
AP- Nov 5, 2000

"The Nebraska senator( Bob Kerrey ) and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, both wounded in Vietnam,
contended it's also a matter of character that Bush avoided duty oversees by joining the Texas Air National Guard."

"Those of us who were in the military wonder how it is that someone who is supposedly serving on active duty,
having taken that oath,
can miss a whole year of service without even explaining where it went," said Kerry. "

And this as reported by Carl Cameron 08/20/04 on Special Report :

" Kerry himself has repeatedly questioned the president's service,"

John Kerry on Good Morning America, April 26, 2004

" George Bush can't even answer whether or not he even showed up for duty in the National Guard."

Kerry however felt it was his right, while in Vietnam, to take off whenever he felt like it.

Page 74, " Unfit For Command "

".. Kerry developed a reputation for wandering off aimlessly."
" ..he simply diverted his boat into Saigon, ' to taste the storied capital,' without informing anyone that he had done so or where he was."

Page 75 Ibid.
Kerry explains his unauthorized foray into Saigon,( we felt like it ) complete with the lies they were going to tell if they were caught on the travel restricted river.

" We didn't have permission from the division or anyone else, but we felt that we deserved an irresponsible, personal moment, so we did it anyway."

No word on whether he got a special hat in Saigon.
