Dole Defends Swiftees in Call From Kerry
NewsMax.com ^ | 8/23/04 | Carl Limbacher

Presidential candidate John Kerry telephoned former Sen. Bob Dole Monday morning to complain about Dole's demand a day earlier that he apologize to Vietnam veterans for protesting the war, the one-time Republican presidential candidate revealed Monday afternoon.

"John Kerry called me this morning, which surprised me," Dole told radio host Sean Hannity. "He said he was very disappointed, we'd been friends. I said John, we're still friends, but [the Swiftvets] have first amendment rights, just as your people have first amendment rights.

Dole told Kerry, "I'm not trying to stir anything up, but I don't believe everyone of these people who have talked about what happened are Republican liars.

"And very frankly, Bush is my guy, and I'm tired of people on your side calling him everything from a coward to a traitor to everything - a deserter."

Dole said he urged Kerry, "Why don't you call George Bush today and say, 'Mr. President, let's stop all this stuff about the National Guard and Vietnam - and let's talk about the issues."

Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."

But the Republican war hero shot back, "You don't have to. You've got all the so-called mainstream media, plus you've got MoveOn.org. and all these other groups that have spent millions and millions of dollars trying to tarnish Bush's image."

"Don't tell me you don't know what some of these people are doing," he told Kerry.

"Everybody like quiet heroes," Dole added, saying he told Kerry, "John, everybody knows you were in Vietnam and the less you say about it, the better."

Dole said he tried to end the tense conversation cordially by telling Kerry, "I wish you good luck, up to a point."

I am kind of uninformed about this, but from what I gather the one guy who was on the commercial got a bronze star for the same reason Kerry did. He also said that Kerry did not deserve it, so he also is saying he himself did not deserve it.

I would say that is quite convincing.

Bob Dole rocks like crazy and it is great that he is using the ‘I fought so I am untouchable by those who did not fight’ theory against the Dems.

Dole fought against fanatical Germans, in a hyper intensity conflict. And he was partially crippled, nerve damage I guess, for life.

Its is such a stain upon America that Clinton would be voted in instead of Dole. That is the definition of tragedy.

Kerry is one of the worst people I have ever seen in politics or anywhere else, it is great that he is getting his just deserts.

All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him.

Welcome to FR! I am kind of uninformed about this, but from what I gather the one guy who was on the commercial got a bronze star for the same reason Kerry did. He also said that Kerry did not deserve it, so he also is saying he himself did not deserve it.

You're mostly correct. At issue, was their any hostile fire? After action report says there was, but Kerry might have been the author of it.

I would say that is quite convincing.

Details have been well picked over on numerous threads around here. Too bad none of the media is interested in looking at the whole picture, cuz if they had been doing their jobs there would not have been any need to buy any ads.

Bob Dole rocks like crazy and it is great that he is using the ‘I fought so I am untouchable by those who did not fight’ theory against the Dems.

This whole Vietnam war hero crap was Kerry's attempt to innoculate himself against all challenges to his foreign policy record.

Its is such a stain upon America that Clinton would be voted in instead of Dole. That is the definition of tragedy.

That's putting it mildly.

Kerry is one of the worst people I have ever seen in politics or anywhere else, it is great that he is getting his just deserts.

His just deserts would include a finding of guilt for treason, but I'll settle with seeing him defeated in November.

There you go with your Jesuit education again. Didn't Father O'Hare tell you that "Jesuitical" was synonomous with "sneaky." :-)

The President is playing an old game. He's being the "good cop" and his surrogates are saying things he can't as the "bad cops." Where the President is killing Kerry with his kindness, his surrogates are delivering a punch from the other side with the acid truth. Kerry's getting clobbered from all directions.

Yeah... the undecideds see him as a liberal pansy-waisted three year old. There's your Kiss Of Death for the Kerry Campaign right there.

The Darth Vader of the Senate is back.

Dole is a hoot sometimes. He's really sucking up all the attention, a real flashbulb hound. He was great during the Battle For Floriduh too.

NO O'Hare was still in the Philippines. But I should have guessed whe Leo McGloughlin abandoned the order to get married. Though he hasn't had as much success as that other refugeee jebbie, John McGloughlin.Though he has to look at Eleanor Clift every Sunday for Penance.

He is also very funny.

After he lost the election to Clinton those Visa? MasterCard or what ever commercials were pretty funny. "Not doing anything for a while?"

On the Brook Shields sitcom she got on the elevator where there was a man reading a newspaper. She said something about "some days you just can't win" Dole lowers the paper and says somrthing like "I know what you mean." I laughed until I cried.

Currently on the local radio Dole has been in a commercial promoting Kansas. It's pretty funny. Especially where Dole says he has named himself Ambassador of Fun - if anyone knows how to have fun it's Bob Dole.

Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."

It wasn't his dime, it was his family's dime!
