Has Kerry Backed Off Of First Purple Heart Claim?
Captain's Quarters ^ | August 24, 2004

Posted on 08/24/2004 7:38:58 AM PDT by John Jorsett

A number of people have written to me overnight stating that a Kerry campaign spokesman has acknowledged on Brit Hume's Fox news show that John Kerry's wound on 2 December 1968 came from an unintentionally self-inflicted wound -- an accident, in other words. So far, I find nothing on this on the Fox web site, but they are notoriously poor at posting transcripts, or even summaries of their own programs. Can someone post the link in the comments section of this post if any confirmation can be made?

UPDATE: Here's the link to the Fox News report from Major Garrett. It mostly covers the Chris Wallace interview with John Hurley and CNN's interview of Bob Dole. Towards the end, Garrett talks about the first Purple Heart:

GARRETT: And questions keep coming. For example, Kerry received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered on December 2nd, 1968. But an entry in Kerry's own journal written nine days later, he writes that, quote, he and his crew hadn't been shot at yet, unquote. Kerry's campaign has said it is possible his first Purple Heart was awarded for an unintentionally self-inflicted wound.

Score another one for the Swiftvets, and another retreat for Kerry, this time on a key contention for both a medal (which some, including me, felt were too difficult to argue effectively) and for his truncated tour of duty. Without that first Purple Heart, Kerry would have had to stay on the Swiftboat assignment past March 17th and remain in combat. Now that the Kerry campaign seems to have retreated from Kerry's citation, the fact that Kerry pushed this award weeks later up a different chain of command takes on a great deal more significance. Instead of bravely taking on combat, he now looks desperate to get out ahead of everyone else and willing to falsify records to do it -- which is exactly the impression that his later assertions have given us.

CQ mentioned the 2 December/11 December conflict back on August 18th in this post, based on a tip from CQ reader Amelia and an article in World Net Daily by Art Moore. Today's links to the Fox News report come from CQ readers Jay Howard and Jim Leonard. Thanks to the entire CQ community for keeping the media on its toes.

Things like this leak out as damage control for major information releases expected in the future. KerryKamp must have some notion that there is an independent document for this PH out there that's ready to come forward. Or perhaps they're planning on signing the 180 and are leaking the worst stuff that will come out.

It was settled for me before this, but how can any independent continue to support Kerry through all this?

If I am not mistaken, unintentionally self-inflicted wounds can still be awarded purple hearts if they were caused during battle and if the intent was to combat the enemy.

For example, if Kerry was in battle, and during the battle he was blowing up rice cashes, and he stood too close, I think he would be eligible to receive a purple heart.

Clinton's MO. Remember, Kerry recently brought ex-Clinton campaigners on board.

I believe you are correct. However, there is no suggestion that there was a battle going on when they blew up the rice, nor any enemy action of any kind at that time.

I think this one had something to do with Kerry using the head on the swift boat and striking a match at the wrong time. Here is a reenactment performed by Donkey's for Kerry.

All his wounds are self-inflicted.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean it was NOT enemy fire!

He is his own worst enemy.

Given the above, how devastating do you think it will be for Hillary if Kerry actually wins this? Do you think it'd be so bad that she'd clandestinely undermine his campaign through her sources inside KerryKamp?

Of course the first PH was erroneously awarded to Kerry.
Kerry knows it, his C.O. Hibbard(sp) knows it, Kerry's crew mates know it, I know it and anyone who spent anytime in Nam knows it!

Kerry is the first clown I ever heard of besides Major Frank Burns on "M.A.S.H." who actually had the audacity to "request" a PH. And after Kerry's C.O. laughed in his face because there was no enemy contact on the day of the supposed injury; Kerry continued for three months after the fact to get someone, anyone to "sign off" on the PH.

Kerry lied about his injuries and he lied when he returned from Nam about the "mass atrocities" that did not occur.

Kerry is either a self-admitted war criminal or a pathological liar. Either way, he is "Unfit for Command"

Kelly

Based upon all the Swifties reports, I am surprised that Kerry wasn't hit with "friendly" fire!

I have never bought into the Clinton wants Kerry to lose line. Hillary is not a risk taker. She can't handle losing. That is why she ran in NY. Practically a couldn't miss. She would much rather some man take the chances and do the dirty work then she follows in working behind the scenes unelected and unaccountable.

I don't see how Kerry can possibly survive after this revelation. If indeed he did make this admission. It makes him the deserter, fraud . . . that we know him to be.

Hillary to the rescue? .
