Sales of Heinz Foods down 9% last quarter

Posted on 08/24/2004 1:42:27 PM PDT by tdadams

CNN just reported that the Heinz Foods company reported a 9% drop in sales for the last quarter.

I realize that neither John Kerry nor his billionaire heiress wife Te-Ray-zah Heinz Kerry receive any profits from Heinz Foods anymore, but nonetheless the connection has turned many off to using Heinz foods, especially the nearly ubiquitous Heinz ketchup.

It is hard to believe this significant drop in sales isn't somewhat attributable to a widespread dislike of Kerry and spouse.

As much as I would like to blame his kerritude and the African Queen, it may have more to do with Atkins and South Beach diets--people may be selecting different summertime fare.

Did Hunts or Dole branded ketchup sell more?

Was at a restaurant recently and saw a "SYSCO" brand ketchup on the table instead of the ubiquitous "Heinz." When the manager came by later in the meal to ask how everything was, I asked about the ketchup. He rolled his eyes and said that so many customers made a stink about "Heinz" that they asked their supplier, Sysco, for a different brand. He says Sysco is having a hard time keeping up with the new demand for their "generic" ketchup.

Oh yeah right, like I am going to believe that. Are they trying to stop the profit hemorrhage. I am one of those that now refuse to buy anything that is associated with Heinz foods.

I'm sure that it is. Summer barbeque season should generate an increase in sales for Heinz, not a decrease. On that I am just speculating, but I can tell you for sure that when I am grocery shopping and given a choice between a Heinz product and a similar product right next to it on the shelf, I am inclined to take the non-Heinz product. Just because of Kerry and spouse. I can't be the only person who has that knee-jerk reaction.

I am sure that company wishes they never heard of John Kerry.

I think Heinz ketchup tastes better than Hunts. We're still eating Hunts.

Word is that the low carb craze and others have flopped.

I am more inclined to believe that Heinz is suffering politically, but need to see what portion of the drop was international sales where the Euroweenies are also boycotting for different reasons.

We have a made-in-Indiana brand named Red Gold (yellow label with a picture of red tomatoes on the front). It is excellent tasting, and I have seen it on the tables (in place of Heinz) in three local establishments lately. Pricewise, it compares to Heinz, but it's worth the $$$.

PS) No, I don't work for Red Gold.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh......................

I'm still using heinz ketchup.

Do I get a demerit or something now?

(It really is the best)

No, no demerit.

Heinz has nothing to do with Kerry or Theresa... she owns about 5% of the stock in the company, but has NOTHING to do with its operations day to day. She married John Heinz years ago, but has NO CONNECTION WITH THE COMPANY!

In fact Heinz CEO is a big Republican Contributor... not exactly suprising since John Heinz was a Republican Senator.

This boycott Heinz thing is nonsense. I can see the humor in "W" ketchup, but it doesn't hurt Kerry or Theresa, just wrongly lumps in a 100+ year old company with these two nimrods who have nothing to do with them.

You are to be complimented for your good taste, both in ketchups and in avoiding kneejerk mindless boycotts.

Wrong. Profits were down 9 percent (because of some special charges). Underlying operating profits were up and SALES WERE UP ABOUT 5 PERCENT.

I'm against Karry as much as anyone, but let's not repeat bad information even if it might have come from the MSM.
