Mark Thatcher held in coup probe Aug 25 2004
Mark Thatcher has been arrested by South African police over allegations he was involved in a planned coup in Equatorial Guinea, according to media reports in South Africa.
The son of former prime minister Baroness Thatcher was arrested at his Cape Town home by detectives according to the South African Press Association.
He was expected to appear in court.
Police spokesman Makahosini Nkosi said: "We are investigating charges of contravening the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act. This is in relation to the possible funding and logistical assistance in relation to the attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea.
"We have conducted a search and seizure operation at his home in Cape Town."
Hope Olivier, a prosecutor at Wynberg Magistrates' Court in Cape Town, where Sir Mark was reported to be appearing, said she was not aware of his arrest.
"I haven't received the new cases so I can't confirm whether he's appearing," she added.
"We will know later."
The arrest comes as trials take place in two countries over the alleged plot, foiled in March, to overthrow the oil-rich African regime.
Isn't this an odd story.
hhhmmmmm....I think he had a great idea. Maybe I'll have to replace him as coup director.
Mental note: Do not plot coups in South Africa.

I wonder if one could plot such a thing while within the USA...
It could be interesting...
I just don't want to end up in trouble for it...
And we were embarrassed by the Reagan kids. Whew...
