"Cleland lost three limbs in an accident during a routine noncombat mission where he was about to drink beer with friends. He saw a grenade on the ground and picked it up. " That's what I don't get. It was a live grenade to blow his legs and right arm off. Was he fragged? Did he knock it off his vest and not know the pin came out? It's a tragedy, but some important info is purposely being omitted.

I heard that he dropped the grenade, then tried to pick it up.

Cleland hitched a ride on a chopper to make a beer run. He had grenades quick-rigged on his flak jacket (quicker access for arming), and when he exited the chopper , a grenade dislodged from its makeshift connection on his jacket. Cleland reached down to pick it up, not knowing that the pin had been pulled, and it blew his lower arm (and both legs) off.
