Senior editor rebuffs request for reporter Mrs. Edwards wants interview by female writer
By C.J. Karamargin ARIZONA DAILY STAR
A top editor at the Arizona Daily Star refused to comply with a request by the Kerry-Edwards campaign for a female features reporter to cover Elizabeth Edwards' campaign visit to Tucson on Sunday.
Managing Editor Teri Hayt overruled other editors who on Friday agreed to the request.
"That was our mistake. We shouldn't have agreed to their request," Hayt said. "They do not get to pick the reporter they want to get their message out."
Hayt compared the request to an unsuccessful bid by the Bush-Cheney campaign for the Star to disclose the race of Mamta Popat, a photographer assigned to cover Vice President Dick Cheney at a rally last month.
"This was another attempt to manipulate our political news coverage," she said.
Edwards, the wife of Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards, visited Tucson as part of a Southwestern campaign swing focusing on female voters. She met with about 75 women at the Manning House. She was in Phoenix on Saturday.
On Friday, Kerry-Edwards spokeswoman Sue Walitsky asked Star music critic Cathalena E. Burch to interview Edwards. With the permission of other editors, Burch agreed. The goal, Walitsky said, was not to have Edwards interviewed specifically by a music reporter, but by a female feature reporter who could write "a softer story" than a political reporter.
Burch "is a fine reporter, but this is not her area of expertise," Hayt said. "This is a political year and Edwards is on a campaign stop, so our best political reporters should be covering the candidates, their wives and all the issues during this election season. "
As it was, this reporter - the Star's male political reporter - covered the event and interviewed Edwards.
How about Ann Coulter?
Or Michelle Malkin........
Or Shawn Hannity in drag!
Great minds think alike! Sorry.
I agree, but when I hear "Ann Colter", Godzilla doesn't pop into my head!
FOFLOL. An Edwards has finally gotten mentioned in the media and wouldn't know it the one who wear the pants. I'd begun to think they were campaigning in Siberia
The Arizona Daily Star musta forgot that they are a Propaganda Organ of the DemokRATisch Partei and must do as they are told.
They vill learn.
So they can talk girl stuff and compare hair-do's?
What's a Mamta Popat?
A. About three dollars.
On the bright side, if any photos were shot during an interview of Elizabeth Edwards by Helen Thomas, Edwards would be the good looking broad of the two.
Are a gentleman and a scholar.
Typical trial lawyer. Edwards can see a losing case a mile away, which is why he made damn sure to put distance between himself and Kerry before he ran the boat aground. He's trying to save what he can for a possible '08 run.
