You're absolutely right about the Kerry fist-salute. He's big on gestures. There's the fist, there's the thumb-up, there's the hands-in-praying-position (learned from THK, it appears), there's the fist-across-the-chest (a middle-eastern thing, I'm told). Since the WSJ ridiculed it, Kerry no longer does much of the pointing-thing.
