Student Pulled from Class for Wearing Hempstead Shirt
ATLANTA -- The town of Hempstead, New York, has a message for school officials in Gwinnett (gwih-NET') County, Georgia: Look at a map.
That's after a student at a suburban Atlanta high school was thrown out of class for wearing a shirt that said Hempstead on it.
Hempstead is the name of his hometown. But school officials apparently thought it was a reference to marijuana.
His family says Terrell Jones was pulled out of class at Grayson High School Monday -- and wasn't allowed to return until he persuaded school officials to look up the town on the Internet.
A spokeswoman for the Long Island town says Hempstead is the nation's largest township, with 759-thousand residents, 22 villages and more than 142 square miles.
Jones' family wants an apology.
This is stupid even by War On Drugs standards.
Homeschooling is the only solution....
Say what you will about the War on Drugs, but children should not be promoting drug use in schools. Apparently, this boy was not -- AND HE WAS NOT PUNISHED.
These people are just lazy bums who are begging for an excuse to make millions off a phony lawsuit so they don't have to work anymore.

Or Knob Lick, KY--but seriesly, there is a Hempstead just down the road and their school colors are green.
All you have to do is insert an "i n" and you have Hempinstead. So you see, they were right to be suspicious.
I guess I won't be handing down that souvenir T-shirt I got in Crystal Meth, Iowa to my progeny then. I'd hate to see them thrown out of school.

I remember hearing of people who were wearing "Ball State" sweatshirts back in the 60s being arrested and harrassed in Florida over spring break. (Ball State University is in Muncie, Indiana. It was then known as Ball State Teachers College.)

He was PULLED OUT OF CLASS. I realize that stupidity is practically a requirement for school administrators these days, but must you DEFEND their stupidity? It only encourages them.
I can only imagine how the school would have reacted if the shirt had said "Industrial Hemp" Hemp may be hemp but it isn't marijuana.
Thank goodness the adults are back in charge.
