Top Russian Official: Plane Terror Likely

MOSCOW - A top Russian official acknowledged on Thursday what many citizens already suspected — that terrorism was the most likely cause of two jetliners crashing minutes apart, a feeling reflected in a newspaper headline warning that “Russia now has a Sept. 11.”

Just a day after officials stressed there were many possibilities besides terrorism, presidential envoy Vladimir Yakovlev told Russia’s ITAR-Tass news agency that the main theory “all the same remains terrorism.” He said the planes’ flight recorders had not provided any clues to the disaster.

Additionally, Transport Minister Igor Levitin confirmed Sibir airlines’ report that its crew activated an emergency signal shortly before the plane disappeared from radar screens. Visiting the site of the crash, he said, however, that details were slim because “no verbal confirmation from the crew was received” saying what the problem was.

Officials previously said there was no indication of trouble from a Volga-Avia express airliner that also crashed late Tuesday, although people on the ground reported hearing a series of explosions.

Russian media also raised questions about a possible link between the crashes and an explosion a few hours earlier at a bus stop on a road leading to Domodedovo airport, where the two doomed planes took off. Without citing any evidence, the reports suggested the blast, which wounded four people, might have been an effort to distract attention.

140 people vs. 3,000? Destruction of our national economy? I don't think it was even close to 9/11.

The crash sites showed large, reconizable piece of fuselage. If flimsy fuselage skin can survive the crash, the FDRs can survive the crash.

I believe the FDRs reveal too much, and in the "Soviet" legacy, it is better to not reveal the truth by saying the truth cannot be revealed ;-) .

It has been posted on FR before and one may well suspect it to be true ---- unless a city is razed by a nuclear device or some other catastrophic event occurs that cannot be swept under the rug, ignored or explained away - we will never see coverage of terror attacks in the U.S. in the manner that took place on 9-11.

The media-gov't are in collusion to keep things under wraps - some think.

i know, i am just worried there really are a lot of dates coming up that mean things to the ROP's and they like to plan big attacks around those dates

following is excerpted from STRATFOR.com..if nothing big happens by the end of the year i think this battle has been won(for now )

"Aug. 26: Anniversary of the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 (by the Gregorian calendar), when a Muslim (Seljuk Turk) force defeated an army of the Byzantine Empire. In the Muslim world, analogies to the current geopolitical climate are easily drawn

Aug. 29-Sept. 2: Republican National Convention in New York City

Aug. 29: Closing ceremonies of Summer Olympics in Athens

Sept. 7: U.S. Congress reconvenes

Two other key events, following closely after the Sept. 10 endpoint, are the meeting of the U.N. General Assembly in New York on Sept. 14 -- where scores of world leaders, including frequently targeted Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf -- will be present, and Sept. 11. Intriguingly, Sept. 11 -- which is not normally a key anniversary within the Islamic world, apart from the memory of 2001 -- does carry some religious significance this year, given the variance between the Islamic and Western calendars. This year, the night between Sept. 10 and 11 will correspond to the 27th day of Rajab: According to the Koran, it was on that night in the Gregorian year 620 that the Prophet Muhammad, aided by the archangel Gabriel, journeyed from Mecca to Jerusalem and, from thence, to heaven and back. It was during this "night of ascension" that, Muslims believe, Allah ordained the obligation of praying five times each day.

The other date specifically mentioned as an opportunity for a "big event" is Nov. 1 -- one day before the U.S. presidential elections. If widespread assessments that al Qaeda will attempt a strike before the elections are correct, this would be virtually the last minute in which to do so -- assuming the organization has the capabilities and the need. Moreover, Nov. 1 coincides with 17 Ramadan -- the 1380th anniversary of the Battle of Badr, the first-ever military encounter between a Muslim and non-Muslim force. (It is said that the Muslims scored an unexpected victory over a much larger and better-equipped army.)

It is worth noting, however, that Ramadan begins this year on Oct. 14 and will last roughly 30 days. As a holy month, Ramadan often inspires a return to religion for many non-practicing Muslims and an increase in fervor among the continually practicing. For some, the timing might add momentum to calls for jihad."

It's going to be an interesting few months and I agree with you. If nothing happens before the election or Christmas, I'll think we really do have them on the run and they just can't mount a large scale attack (for now).

Terrorists want Kerry, and an attack favors Bush. There won't be any attack until after the election. If Kerry wins, and he will, they will wait until January 21st. If Bush wins, and he won't, I haven't a clue.

It's possible that if it was terrorism, the planes were put down by the passengers? It could have been another 9/11 if it had gone far enough. It's all speculation though.

"although people on the ground reported hearing a series of explosions. "

If this is declared terrorism, will it be the first time that unrecorded crash witnesses have been 'right?'

Uh well, they won't be voting for Nader this time around. Both sides will cheat of course, it just works better in the big cities, and Democrats are going to go for broke in that regard. I don't think many Gore voters are going to switch. I can't say the same about W's support. Hey I hope I'm wrong.
