Words may pin a medal rap on Kerry (Silver and Bronze Stars)
New York Daily News ^ | August 27, 2004 | JAMES GORDON MEEK, Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - The latest mystery surrounding John Kerry's Vietnam war medals is how the language describing his actions was embellished when Kerry asked for copies of the commendations years later. Kerry apparently asked sometime in the 1980s for copies of the commendations that accompanied his Silver Star and Bronze Star.

His campaign Web site carries the original and the later versions of the commendations.

The new citation for his Silver Star lauds the ex-Navy lieutenant's "brave action, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty" during a Feb. 28, 1969, enemy ambush.

That language, signed by Reagan-era Navy Secretary John Lehman, was not included in the 1969 original issued by Navy Pacific Fleet Commander John Hyland.

The citation for Kerry's Bronze Star, issued for rescuing Green Beret Jim Rassman in the Mekong Delta, adds that Kerry's "complete dedication to duty reflected great credit upon himself."

Lehman denied a charge yesterday by chief Kerry foe John O'Neill of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth on Fox News earlier this month, who claimed that Kerry asked Lehman to rewrite the award.

"That's not what happened," Lehman told The News. "I did not rewrite the award. And John Kerry did not come to me."

Lehman, a GOP member of the 9/11 commission, said when Kerry lost the originals and requested replacements, Lehman was not involved in the "routine" task.

The new citations aren't dated. Kerry was either lieutenant governor of Massachusetts or a senator during Lehman's tenure.

Kerry campaign officials did not comment yesterday.

A Navy official said yesterday, "It's 20 years old, and they're not going to investigate."

I guess that leaves it up to me then. OK, I'll open up the Kerry campaign's Acrobat file of the award citations, except I won't open it in Acrobat. I'll open it in a text editor, where most of it looks like gibberish.

But not all of it.

Ah yes, who cares who said what and to whom. We are still talking about Kerry's medals. It's a good day in Republican land.

Adobe makes photoshop and acrobat. I'll bet there's a reference to photoshop in most acrobat files. In order to sie and crop images for acrobat you have to use some kind of image editor. If acrobat does its own sizing and cropping, you can bet the functions are a subset of photoshop.

As for the additional language, that's boilerplate added to all citations, as of a certain date. The question is, why did Kerry request replacement medals, since he never threw his own away, and they were at home when he threw away someone eles's?

Try it and see :)

Open up some of Kerry's other pages. Most do not contain the string "Photoshop". This one does, multiple times.

It does argue for Kerry signing the 180. Let's see the original.

Lehman said Kerry requested replacements. It was handled routinely. Any signatures are photocopies or machine done. Lehman did not personally get involved in the request, or so he says.

So why did Kerry need replacements, particularly if he has copies of the original citations?

Agreed. Everyday seems to bring new allegations. I think Kerry's military record is like an onion, there are so many layers to be uncovered the press might be talking about it till Halloween.
