SACRAMENTO -- Reigniting a potentially explosive political issue, the state Senate voted Friday to allow illegal immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses, but a stopgap financing plan for the San Francisco Bay Bridge overhaul stalled.

Braving an almost certain veto by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, senators voted 21-14 to send the Assembly a new driver's license bill -- nine months after lawmakers repealed a similar law signed by then-Gov. Gray Davis just weeks before he was recalled.

Schwarzenegger campaigned against the law while running to succeed Davis and has opposed signing a bill reinstating the law unless the licenses contain some indication that the driver is in the country illegally.

I guess I don't get it... When I visit another country I can rent a car and drive where ever and whenever I like without getting a drivers license from the host county. Mexicans, with a valid Mexican drivers license can drive here.

Next question. Who's going to insure these people?

It seems to me that it ain't about driving. It's about having a legal ID that can be used anywhere in the U.S..

Remember BUSTAMONTE!

With Arnold out of state, the lieutenant governor, Cruz Bustamonte, gets to sign the bill in Schwarzenneger's absence. Stroke of the pen, law of the land...

"Next question. Who's going to insure these people?"

Believe it or not there was talk last year that the state assembly was also working on a bill that would force state tax payers subsidize their insurance should their licence ID become legal, stay tunnel....

There's nothing brave about destroying the country from within.

Illegal is Illegal.

Allowing Driver's Licenses legitimizes the illegal foreigner as legal.
And, they can register to Vote!

California Senate passing laws that break the law!

Arnold's aides have consistently said he would veto the bill if it did not contain a statement on the license that the licensee was a non citizen. He had better veto it or Arnold is in big trouble. This whole matter is not about getting licenses for illegals, it is about getting illegals the privileges that US citizens have and eventually blurring the line between citizens and illegals. The more rights the illegals have the more the left will consider them citizens and a protected group.
