I highly recommend The Battle of Augusta National: Hootie, Martha and the Masters of the Universe as an all-around fascinating story of the history of golf, the evolving south, Augusta National itself, and required reading for anyone studying our Mainstream Media (such as it is). If anything it went far too easy on Martha and her twisted philosophy (and her bigoted sterotyping of southerners). Easily the ugliest part is how she and her poodle Raines of the NYT tried to ruthlessly bully Tiger Woods into dancing to their tune. The climax of course, is how Martha's massively amplified media campaign fizzled in a rain-soaked whimper. I still think Hootie erred when he ran out the big guns in response to her letter. I think he could have got away easily with simply ignoring her rather than handing her the spotlight.
