Kim Jong-il's Wife, Ko Yong-hee, died on Aug. 13

08/30/04

Ko Yong-hee(age:51), the wife of N. Korean leader Kim Jong-il, died of heart failure at the dawn of Aug. 13, highly credible Chinese sources on N. Korea confirmed on Aug. 30.

The sources revealed that they had verified Ko's death through multiple channels, adding that they had already had her funeral without making a public announcement, in order to follow the policy of keeping Kim Jong-il's personal life private and also out of fear that power struggles may erupt over who is going to succeed Kim.

According to N. Korean observers, Ko, who was originally an ethnic Korean in Japan, was the only Kim's woman who actually played the role of a first lady. The other two, late Sung Hye-rim and Kim Young-sook did not.

Although the direct cause of Ko's death is heart failure, she was treated for breast cancer(the cancer of mammary gland) a few years ago. It had recurred again last year. The realistic chance of her full recovery turned out to be almost nil, it has been learned.

In addition to this, she sustained serious head injury last September, which further damaged her health. Because of this, french medical team made a highly secret trip to N. Korea last year (to treat her.) This year she had undergone the treatment for her tumor and her brain in general.

So she had both a breast cancer and a head injury from traffic accident. They turned out to be not mutually exclusive. There has been a flurry of speculation about the veracity of her head injury story. It is also true.

I saw the announcement where she was ill. Theory was that the death was imminent or had already taken place.

Looks like she had already died BEFORE they announced she was ill.

Remind you of anyone we know?

I thought Kim had pretty good control of the whole shebang. How could power struggles erupt?

I'll go ahead and write the opening paragraph for the DPRK News Agency Website:

It is with great sadness that we must annouce that Ko Yong-hee, has left the companionship of our illustrious leader and savior of the homeland. The Great Kim Jong-Il, who has stood fast against the Western horde, is said to be resting in his offical residence in Pyongyang. A Basket of Flowers honoring our Great Leader was received from the Syrian Embassy.

IIRC, it has to do with the mistress's son, the wife's sons, and the other mistress's sons. I really don't know how many children he had by his mistresses, but the struggle will be when Kim decides who will succeed him. He probably doesn't want to announce it until after he's dead before he died, otherwise he could be dead earlier. LOL
