Absolutely. CNN is trying to defend its candidate (Kerry) by undercutting Zell's excellent speech. Zell will not harm the Republicans. He just bought them an extra half point, last night.

I agree with your premise, but disagree on the scope of the effect.

Zell Miller's speech was what they call in the flying game, "The Golden BB" -- that tiny little projectile, insignificant in the the vast amount of anti-aircraft fire, that finds that particular spot that can do the most possible damage to its target! They can't call Zell a red-meat partisan Rep, because he is a Dem! The best they can do is, rather than defend against the specific allegations, make note of the fact that Zell worked for Lester Maddox once upon a time. (It's strange that was in long forgotten past when he was a Dem and "on the reservation"?)

I've talked to several folks today who saw the speech --- it was a direct hit in a very soft spot of the Kerry campaign!! Everyone who saw the speech said that they now see Kerry in a very different light.

Not a half-point, I think it's more like a point and a half!
