Beslan school seizure involved 26 terrorists - Fridinsky

BESLAN. Sept 4 (Interfax) - A total of 26 terrorists were involved in the school seizure in the North Ossetian town of Beslan, Russian Deputy Prosecutor General Sergei Fridinsky told journalists in Beslan on Saturday.

All the hostage-takers have been killed, he said in an interview broadcast during the Rossiya television station's Vesti news program.

"Twenty-six bodies of militants were found and removed from the scene. We have no doubts that they are the people who took part in the terrorist attack. They are being identified at the moment," the deputy prosecutor general said.

Asked by a journalist whether any of the terrorists may still be on the run, Fridinsky said: "Most likely, no."

Asked whether any of the terrorists have been detained, the deputy prosecutor general answered in the negative.

"Looking at the results of all investigative operations conducted until today, we don't think a single person managed to escape," he said.

"There were a total of 26 people [militants]. And I think that this is the final figure," he said.

Commenting on possible theories behind the terrorist attack, Fridinsky said that "the theory is almost clear. The militants' demands were aimed at putting pressure on the authorities. But, of course, the authorities will not accept such demands on any occasion, and everything will be done to suppress such militants' sorties," he said.

Commenting on a previously suggested theory that the terrorists prepared the action in advance by delivering explosives and weapons disguised as construction materials to the Beslan school during this summer's repairs in the building, Fridinsky said that "so far, the investigation has not linked this sortie with the construction works in the school in any way."

I don't believe this and that's why the Russians don't trust their government...I heard this live on TV and have read differently in various reports...I have no idea about the construction and smuggling in the explosives, though I have read it.

Most horrific photos I have seen since 9-11-04. Half were al Queda Arab assassins, allegedly.

Actually ALL were al Queda IslamoFascist assassins, definitely.

What, exactly, would prevent this from happening in East Orange, New Jersy? Time to close down immigration from the Middle East was ten years ago. Exactly what benefit do native American citizens derive from unchecked third world immigration? Not nearly enough to make it worth this kind of disaster.

The wires (Reuters, et al) are calling them "Chechen separatists," which is clearly untrue since 10 were Arabs, not Chechen.

The Ruskies should take their remains and bury them in vats of pig lard, head down.

I will tell you if the Russians ignore that this is Al Qaeda then, Al Qaeda will hit them again and it will be worse.

This happened to us. Oklahoma City ignored, U.S. domestic flights being blown up ignored, WTC bombings ignored. We only woke up when 9-11 happened.

Hopefully the Russians will wake up and understand who they are dealing with.

I don't believe this story, either. Special forces worth their salt will capture some of the terrorists alive for interrogation and determining if a network exists and how far-flung it is.

Could it be that the storming Russkies were so vengeful that they destroyed every last one of the terrorists inside? I suppose it's possible. If this happened, it was stupid, IMHO.

The smartest thing the Russians could do would be to tell the world ALL the terrorists are dead. That way they can interrogate (torture) information out of them without interference from the 'humanitarians' screaming about their rights. Plus it makes any cohorts that could still be out there think they are safe.

You are correct, but unless sKerry and the dems take over Russia this will not be ignored.

I don't know what to believe, after reading an article on FR yesterday, about three still being alive, and the crowd beating and hanging another. Is the Ruskie gov't lying again? I'll just wait to read more.

Good point. The Russians see what we have to put up with these types of prisoners. I would do the same.

Catching what I could on TV (Am. & Russian coverage), the Russians are about 20 years behind in covering events of this magnitude.
