EHRAN (AFP) Sep 02, 2004 Iran intends to launch its first satellite into space in April 2005, with the device described as being purely for civil purposes, Iranian media reported Thursday.

The satellite, code-named Mesbah (lantern), was shown on state television. It is said to weigh 60 kilograms (132 pounds) and is cube-shaped which each side measuring 50 centimetres (20 inches). It will be put into orbit at an altitude of 900 kilometres (about 560 miles).

"The satellite will be used to identify natural resources, control the electrical and energy network (gas and oil), and later on can be used by communications and crisis management," press reports said.

The head of the Islamic republic's Scientific and Industrial Research Centre, Seyed Mohammad Fathi, was quoted as saying the project would allow Iran to develop other satellites in the future.

In January, Iran's defence minister said the satellite would be launched by Iranian technology, but gave no further details.

What I'm interested in is whether the Iranian government will still exist by the time they get their ICBM.

Oh, no, it's the Mini Borg.

I wonder if the YAL-1A ABL can be pointed up.

One of the threats of the future is going to be domination of the stratosphere.

We have got to be prepared to:

* knock out enemy satellites,
* protect our own satellites
* have sufficient redundancy in case we lose one or more satellites.

You forgot one: Attack.

Folks, we have more than a 20 year lead on this sort of thing.

I'm reminded of a joke;

Q: Why does the Iranian Navy have glass bottom boats?
A: So they can see their Air Force.

An Iranian satellite's life span the moment hostilities begin, I would estimate, is about 1.25 seconds.

If I was President of the US, and I wanted to do something about all these little hellholes all over the world that wanted to lay their hands on a nuke, along with this one particular hellhole (hellhole "#1") that is months away from having a nuke, I'd probably have my intelligence people devote lots of resources to locating and setting up snares for plutonium smugglers and dealers in nuke-making equipment and know-how (China?) in the hopes of discouraging the various hellholes from reacting to some major event in the near future... and then order a fullscale attack on hellhole #1. That's if I was president. Tough job, no doubt about it.

Any way, I fear that next year will be rather eventful.

Here's hoping for a Mossad ground crew or launch control....

Here's hoping it never leaves the pad or comes down in Mecca

Leapfrog: "You forgot one: Attack."

Sorry, I mean attack ground tagets. You already said other orbiting targets.

If I was a particularly good president, I would try to make contacts with dissenting groups in Iran and inform their brightest and best that events may soon overtake them, so they'd better be ready. No risk there, as the government of said hellhole would already be aware of the situation.

The satellite isn't worth knocking down.

we perfected a satellite killer 20 years ago for near-Earth (500 miles or less) satellites ...

and then we "retired" it ... (or did we I wonder?)

it was small enough to carry on any medium fighter, including those on carriers ...

No point. Better to kill the regime all together before they export their technology to other regimes.

Why not put a US geostationary satellite hovering over Mecca?
