LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- One northbound lane has been closed by a washout on Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County due to erosion from a washout blamed on Hurricane Frances.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the pavement fell away from the slow lane at Tenth Avenue in Lake Worth.
Traffic is squeezing into fewer lanes, and drivers are being asked to avoid the area.
A construction crew is on hand, but the washout is still growing. Troopers are warning that other lanes may be affected later.
What Florida crops are being effected by Francis?
Well I heard that because of the tracks of Charlie and Frances, the citrus trees in the center of the state are damaged (and that's a long term problem, not just this year)
Not good. Just looking at the latest radar loop and it seems to have stalled again.
This time right over Tampa-St. Pete.
Charley especially came right up through the heart of the citrus belt, and the groves took a horrible beating. Lots of trees damaged or destroyed, and lots of green fruit on the ground. The fruit would ordinarily be harvested starting in a few weeks, so it was heavy on the trees, just needing a bit more time to ripen. The citrus crop is going to be sh!t this year.
That's what I was afraid of. Thanks.
On a similar note, Charley washed out about 100-150 feet of eastbound State Road 60 east of Lake Wales, where an old sand mine pit comes right up to the roadway. A guy was killed there when it happened - he was out driving during the storm (!) and drove right into the washout. He never even saw it - probably died without knowing what hit him.
