BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraqi officials thought they had the king of clubs.
On Sunday morning, the Iraqi Defense Ministry spokesman announced the capture of one of Iraq's most wanted men, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, a trusted confidant of Saddam Hussein and the highest-ranking regime official to remain free.
In detail, the spokesman told a U.S.-funded television station here how U.S. and Iraqi forces had stormed a medical clinic in the northern city of Tikrit where the feeble al-Douri was receiving treatment for leukemia.
By midafternoon, officials from no less than four Iraqi ministries -- including two ministers and a ranking officer from the Iraqi National Guard -- had all but confirmed al-Douri's capture after hunting him for months. They were only awaiting the results of a DNA test that one said was "60 percent" done.
But by nightfall, it appeared they had come up empty-handed

Charming.
Don't insult the Iraqi Nat'l Guardsmen fighting to protect their country.
What about the battle that killed 70 terrorists and had 80 captured.
Did that happen?
Who was the guy that they got?
Maybe they did get him but want to keep it secret?
Government officials and U.S. forces based in Tikrit say there was no operation, no arrest and no casualties... go figure.
They got him. Just disinfo while they extract intelligence from him.
I agree.

True or disinformation?
They say the guy caught was a relative, this might explain why they thought it was him. Maybe he even had red hair?
The great story continues!!!
To get the full flavor of a decent report, you need to read the full article.
The Bugmenot extension to Firefox and Mozilla (I think ) will avoid the heavy signup and Email traffic back to you.
The Times reporter doesn't pin down where that happened. the story seems to have grown as the report passed thru the multiple layers of the bureaucracy.
Now how did that happen?
Allegra -- more on yesterday's hot story.
Looks like some good news coming down the pipe, and more intel regardless if Al Douri was caught or not.
The demonstrations in Najaf against Sadr dont hurt either.
Its getting harder by the week for the Terrorists to hide in Iraq.
Why not? They acted like clowns in this incident. Keystone Kop Klowns. Sounds like a bunch of high-schoolers who need remedial education in basic fact-finding, press relations and common sense.
Lastly the news strongly indicating that Eizat indeed was captured but because he hold important information about the cells of the terrorists and the link with the Zarqawi groups it has been decided to deny his capture for the time being. This will help in getting more information and allows intrusion through the network of these cells.
