SAINT PETERSBURG, Sept 6 (AFP) - Around 15,000 people observed a minute of silence here Monday in a demonstration to remember the hundreds of victims of Russia's school hostage crisis and to demand an end to terrorism.

The protesters, most of them young people, carried Russian flags and placards bearing slogans including "No to Terrorism" and "Death to the Killers of Children".

The protest on Saint Petersburg's Palace Square also heard a children's choir sing Ave Maria while images of hostage-taking incidents carried out in Russia in recent years were broadcast on two large screens.

In Moscow meanwhile authorities made preparations for a mass meeting scheduled for Tuesday near the Kremlin, also planned as a remembrance for the victims of the school hostage disaster and a protest against terrorism.

The state-run Rossiya television network on Monday broadcast an announcement of the demonstration, showing the time and location on the screen for around one minute as stirring music played in the background.

"I remember a couple of days after Sept. 11 writing that weepy candlelight vigils were a cop-out: the issue wasn't whether you were sad about the dead people but whether you wanted to do something about it."
- Mark Steyn, Chicago Sun-Times, September 5, 2004.

For some excellent thoughts about the (limited) options open to Russia, I strongly recommend The Crossroads at The Belmont Club.

Thanks for the ping, Knighthawk!

"Death to the Killers of Children".

When the above attitude takes root and grows, we'll be able to deal with the problem of is-slime. How tragic that it took the present atrocity to awaken a few people.

"Death to the Killers of Children"

Hey that slogan seems to be a good start--I'm sure the Russian people will put it into action. At least we haven't heard people asking for forgiveness for the terrorists. I heard some member of the clergy did that right after the OK City bombing. I read the Mark Steyn quote you mentioned the other day--I liked that one too.
