ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- North Carolina Department of transportation crews are working to reopen Interstate 40 and more than 215 primary and secondary roads due to mudslides, downed trees, and high water in the western region of the state.
I-40 is currently restricted in both directions between mile markers 67-72 due to a mudslide on Old Fort Mountain.
One lane is open in each direction, but traffic is moving very slowly through the area.
NCDOT crews are hoping to reopen the road by Thursday morning.
The worst conditions are found in counties surrounding the Asheville area and along the Tennessee state line, including and south of the Boone area.
Conditions are expected to continue well into Wednesday and beyond. Motorists are advised to avoid traveling in these areas.
I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of this in WVA and Ohio as the night progresses.
24-hour Rain Totals Grandfather Mountain 13.96 Bakersville, NC 12.36 Morganton, NC 6.82 Shelby, NC 5.76 Chester, SC 5.72 Rock Hill, SC 3.72 Charlotte, NC 3.04
In my backyard in southern Gaston County, we had 3.99" through this morning.
Parts of I-26 from the SC border into Asheville are also closed. Although not as bad, we have a few roads closed here in upstate SC as well. One just a mile away from my home is closed because of river taken a bridge.
Schools closed tomorrow here in Morganton with several roads closed and several bridges flooded. Still waiting fro runnoff from the mountains so the Catawba river may not yet have crested.
I wonder what the flood level was at Wilson Creek?
Yep, I am 25 miles north of Charlotte and 'dogs and cats' were raining on us all night.
I just crossed Winding Stair Gap it good to go.
The Natahala is Wild today
I don't know but channel 3 news showed the Caldwell county Sheriff's dept. on the scene. They probably haven't seen the worst of it yet either. Have you ever heard of the flood that wiped out the communities of Mortimer and Edgemont in the early 1900s?
We were vacationing in Waynesville, NC over the holiday weekend and the weather was perfect. We woke up to a steady rain on Monday morning as we packed and prepared to leave. Rain was with us until we got about twenty five miles north of Ashville on I 26, and the trip home to northern Virginia on I 81 was ok.
We got lucky, big time.
I had 8 1/4 inches here at my house near Asheville.

Let Constitution Day or Taxrelief know if you want on or off the NCPing list, or if you think you've been accidentally dropped, or ....
Haywood County got nailed pretty good from what I'm seeing on the local news.
Oops. Got a daughter in Rock Hill. I had better call
Yeah man, I bet the Natty is raging!
All the creekboaters are going gaga over this rain.
We got 11" over near Rosman. Schools closed due to the French Broad River overflowing it's banks. Check out our waterfall:

Water system damaged in Asheville, Boil Alert issued.

The surging Swannanoa River flooded Biltmore Village and washed out roads and bridges in the eastern part of Buncombe County.*

Yup, I took that one. I'm going to upload (to wundergound.com) another my wife took in Rosman.
Asheville was pounded with rain.

Rosman, NC
She also mentioned that they are going to cut her city water off for three days for repairs. I can't believe this - can you verify?
That sounds about right....people are out of power and the water will cut off for a while for repairs. Is she elderly..? I'd be more than happy to check on her for you.
"Water World"...chuckle.

I wondered if that would give you the willies (seeing your picture on FR before you could get back to the thread...).
:-)
8:00pm
Just talked to my son near Pittsburgh.
They are getting it now, about 3" so far.
My relatives in Black Mtn. ,NC said that US 70 flooded, several businesses in town have water standing.
Flat Creek ( Montreat to Black Mtn ) went way over its banks but was coming down now.
That landscaping company in post 23 is probably not 100 yards from the Catawba river which is way over its banks. WBTV news had footage of the football field at Freedom High School (right across the river from there) under water.

I-40 is closed, due to a massive mud slide, at Exit 72
Go to http://www.burke.k12.nc.us/index.html and you can see images of the football field under water (I would have posted them here but I can't figure out how to break out of the slideshow).

Thanks-those partially submerged posts you can see in the first picture are the tops of a brick wall that surrounds the field which are about 4 feet tall. The grandstand is the home seating which is across the field from the river so that gives you an idea about how much the river is over its banks. Usually the river is about 10-12 feet below those banks. The only flooding that comes close to this in my memory is the aftermath of Hugo in 1989.
Wow! That's about 16 feet above norm. I saw somewhere that it didn't crest until 8pm.

That may give people some perspective about how wide the flooding is. I would say that in the low lying areas where the football field and the landscaping store are the flooding is a couple hundred feet over the river banks. Just down river from there the banks are much steeper so the flow may be backed up at this point.
How far is this area from Biltmore Village?
We are about 50 miles east of Asheville, but we are downhill. I don't remember where the continental divide is exactly but I think the rivers in Asheville (French Broad, Swannannoa feed west to the gulf of Mexico so we won't be getting the runoff from there. Still, there is plenty of water yet to come from the mountains that do feed the Catawba river.
Yes she is elderly but I have located my cousin who also lives in Asheville so all is well - thanks for your lind offer!
lind = kind
Yes, the eastern continental divide is just east of Ridgecrest which is east of Asheville and the Swannanoa / French Broad rivers. So look out Mississippi River...
The Eastern Continental Divide passes just down the road from me in Rosman. Driving along Frozen Creek Rd. you can see a small stream flowing to the French Broad at one point, then 100 yards later another one flowing the opposite way to Lake Jocassee.
Waterlines coming out of the water plant were broken and have to be replaced. UNCA has cancelled classes for the rest of the week and told those kids who could to go home and has brought in bottled water for those who must stay.
