Thugs pick wrong target - a karate instructor

07.09.2004 12.00 pm

A karate instructor's trip to Fiji was about to get ugly, but not for him.

Unfortunately for the six attackers, they had picked on the wrong guy -- a fourth dan blackbelt in karate.

Craig Nordstrand, 47, had just beaten off four of the attackers. The other two had unsuccessfully had a go at his mate Peter Roche.

After taking an initial beating, the six backed off and surrounded the pair.

Nordstrand tried to give his attackers a warning. "Do you want karate?" he asked.

One of the robbers did, but it was a bad mistake.

"I kicked him straight under the chin and into the throat," Nordstrand said. The gang of thugs scarpered into the Suva darkness.

The incident last week had followed what had been a pleasant evening of a meal and drinks.

Nordstrand had been in Suva with several Northland youngsters for the Oceania Karate Championships. He had been walking back to the team hotel with New Zealand manager Peter Roche when two men approached them asking for money and then another four emerged from the shadows.

Nordstrand's exploits made radio news in Fiji and proved a popular talking point around the karate traps.

"It was a bit of excitement," he said from his Whangarei home yesterday.

Aside from the attack drama, the trip was a success for Nordstrand who had watched two of his Northland charges win Oceania titles.

Several others won medals.

This is like a bad martial arts film. LOL.

Best thing for an urban terrorist -- a kick in the throat!

So, they didn't apprehend any of the guys? Does anyone know if there was any physical evidence like teeth on the ground, etc?

Not to imply anything, mind you, just asking...

They ought to ban that damned karate stuff. It's dangerous in the wrong hands. (snicker)

The element of surprise is a very valuable weapon in a fighter's arsenal. This action by the 'martial artist' tells me alot about him.

I think you're right. I did kickboxing for several years and when you fight you're going to get hurt. The most amazing system I saw was a demonstration by this guy who taught special forces and executives. This guy would SLAP his opponent on the side of the face and they would drop like a pole-axed steer. Very effective.

Or, if you can't kick that high anymore (old age), a good, hard kick to the side of the knee will usually bring 'em down!

I saw a video a few years ago where some pimp was beating on one of his girls across the street from a karate school. While students videotaped from the 2nd story, the instructor goes down and yells from across the street for the pimp to stop.

The pimp tells him to mind his business or he will come over and kick the guy's butt. The guy keeps telling the pimp to stop so the pimp walks over threateningly.

The instructor raises his arms in a feigned move to protect himself as the pimp approaches and when the pimp gets within reach just brings one hand down across the jaw/neck of the pimp like an axe.

The guy hits the ground like a sack of potatoes.

The part I liked best was the feign move. It gave the pimp a sense of confidence as this guy was pulling his hands over his head... that confidence opened him up for a solid shot.

Seems like if there are 6 attackers, the best way to warn them that you know karate is to pull a Steven Segal move and break an elbow on the 1st guy you can. The rest will figure it out.

I agree with that. Knowledge of martial arts isn't exactly something one who studies them goes around blabbing about.

Plus it's such a cheesy line. "Do you want ka-ra-te?"

Note to self... that sounds like a line John Kerry would use...
