The Australian flag still flies proudly outside its wrecked embassy in Jakarta.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and Australian Federal Police chief Mick Keelty flew from Adelaide to Jakarta last night.
Mr Downer described the explosion as an "attack on Australia".
The blast shattered windows at the building and caused collatoral damage for some distance around.
An enormous white column of smoke rose slowly into the air.
The attack left at least nine people dead and 180 injured.
Bemused and shocked workers were evacuated quickly but calmly from the scene after the blast at 1.15pm (AEST).
Others were less fortunate, but the many injuries were attended to as quickly as possible.
Police arrived on the scene quickly to try and restore some sort of order.
The injured were rushed to a hospital not far from the embassy.
Local people were shocked by the blast. Many pedestrians struck by flying glass.

I have to make light when I can...it's my defense mechanism so that I don't buy a ticket to Islamofascist land and start the vigilante actions that I'ld love to do.
