Flashback: Dan Rather interviews GHW Bush in 1988

January 25, 1988: In his infamous January 25, 1988 CBS Evening News interview an aggressive Dan Rather grilled VP George Bush about Iran-Contra, repeatedly cutting him off and arguing with him. Rather declared "You've made us hypocrites in the face of the world."

In the interview, Dan Rather kept trying to implicate George Bush, trying to get Bush to say that he was involved in Iran-contra. Over and over again, Rather would ask Bush a question about his knowledge of the imbroglio. When Bush wouldn't concede that he had prior knowledge, Rather would interrupt him and ask him another question about whether he knew. This went on until Rather interrupted Bush for the last time and ended the interview. The interview caused a stir. A number of CBS affiliates called the Bush campaign to apologize for the anchor's behavior. Sam Donaldson, known for his own confrontational interviews, said, "Rather went too far." Mike Wallace, a fellow CBS reporter, said, "The style was wrong. Dan lost his cool."

Have decided that Rather's story was released now (rather than October) to "decoy" American's from the true story about this week, i.e. the 3 yr anniversary of 9/11.

One would have expected this story to be saved for the last week of October, but the Demos needed something big to suck the air out of this week's memorials to 9/11; it's a bigger risk Kerry than the Swifties, i.e. American's remembering 9/11, and Bush's actions to defend American.

I.e. link of my comment to this story: i.e. the hit piece by Rather was SOP for him; his piece in 1988 was in the same mode, i.e. to divert attention from Dukakis' collapsing campaign.

IMO.. SFS

Has everyone forgotten Rather being a guest of Saddam and the suck-up interview arranged by the great American, Ramsey Clark? LOL!! BIRDS OF A FEATHER, FLOCK TOGETHER!!

This is a great interview, because of when Bush 41 asked Rather if he'd want his entire career judged on the 7 minutes of silence his brooding over something or other at the US open in 1987 (I think) caused.

For younger FReepers:

"Dan has taken some pretty hard shots over the years, many of which were the result of trying to do the right thing. He was very upset, for example, when tennis was permitted to invade the 'CBS Evening News,' " Johnson says, referring to a 1987 incident in which a women's U.S. Open tennis semi-final ran late, and CBS preempted the first two minutes of the newscast to carry it. There are varying accounts of what happened next, but the facts are that Rather was angry, left the anchor desk and was not in place when the network wanted to go to the news. As a result, CBS was black – no picture, no sound, nothing – for six minutes.

Rather would probably be relieved to be judged by only that event right about now.

Thanks for posting that.. it reminded me why I hate Dan Rather... that smug smirk on his face at the end makes me sick. I haven't watched his 'news' since that aired.

As my calmer wife always reminds me...people always get what they deserve.

Dan Rather will now suffer the professional and personal destruction he has earned from a lifetime of distortion and bias posing as objective news reportage.

And the CBS producer who "unearthed" the Abu Ghraib abuse-- which led to untold numbers of military and civilian reprisal deaths, and exponentially-increased hatred for America in the Muslim world--will herself be destroyed by the scandal...as she is directly responsible for it, and lazily went with it out of a drooling hatred of the President.

I hope they are both shattered by the evil they have done. Perhaps God will forgive them--and I urge them to start that work ASAP--but I, my fellow FReepers and the American people NEVER will.

Indeed. I'm sure they've been sitting on the memos for some time, ever since they were allowed to 'steal' the docs. So, what's their excuse gonna be, "B**** set me up"?

You noticed the smirk, too? Man, I wanted to reach through Time and smack the little sh*t hard. What a creep.

That coward Rather knew that GHWB was a candidate and wouldn't open up on him on live TV. I had so much respect for 41 after that interview. Come to think of it, that interview probably got 41 elected... and stupid Rather is doing the same thing again for 43 :-)
