MATLEY CONFIRMS DOCUMENTS WERE COPIES [Byron York]
The New York Times interviewed CBS documents expert Marcel Matley, who confirmed that the documents the network gave him were photocopies -- and poor ones at that. According to the paper:
"Mr. Matley said the documents the network sent him were so deteriorated from copying that it was impossible to identify the typeface." '''It's sheer speculation to say that you couldn't have done that until a computer came along,'' he said."
"As a result, he said, he focused on the signatures. CBS sent him the four newfound documents, as well as others that have been verified as signed by Colonel Killian. 'There were significant similarities and the differences were insignificant,' he said in the configuration of letters and the angle of the writing."
Meanwhile, the Washington Post reported that, "Matley said last night that a '60 Minutes' executive had asked him not to give interviews."

How does he know that the signatures were actually on the documents if he did not see the originals?
Has anyone tried to match the signature up against other documents signed by Killian that are in the public domain to see if the signature is merely copied from another document?

"Matley said last night that a '60 Minutes' executive had asked him not to give interviews."
They stand behind their sources. But, they won't talk anymore about it.

Please excuse if this is a dupe. Well, Matley is a dupe, but I don't think you need to be excused for it. :)

It appears CBS was actively trying to get its sources to reach a conclusion, and misled said sources into doing so. They ignored Killian's wife and son, they misled Hodges by telling him the memos were handwritten, and now they gave the expert (who I still don't trust)
poor quality photocopies to determine if the documents were original.
Note that they gave him photocopies of low quality instead of the originals. Photocopies are more likely to look like they are typewriter generated because the distortion from copying makes them look fuzzy and jagged like a typewriter rather than sharp like modern word processors and printers.

"Mr. Matley said the documents the network sent him were so deteriorated from copying that it was impossible to identify the typeface." '''It's sheer speculation to say that you couldn't have done that until a computer came along,'' he said." Somebody needs to tell this guy that the documents have released and other experts have already identified the type face. I wonder if CBS sent him copies of the docs they posted so that his are worse than ours.

Rather has revealed himself for the political hack he is.
People are concentrating on those documents...because they are forgeries, fake, and a slap in the face of a free and thinking people. Those forgeries lay the foundation for the more relevent parts of the story and establish the whole thing as nothing but a sham and cheap political hack job.
If Rather thinks so little of the people of this country whom he tries to speak to...and it is clear that he believes we are idiots...then he had best be prepared for a continued fight until the truth of this obviious sham is made known from the rooftops and until his credentials and career are laid low in the mud from whence they have sprung.

"Mr. Matley said the documents the network sent him were so deteriorated from copying that it was impossible to identify the typeface." '''It's sheer speculation to say that you couldn't have done that until a computer came along,'' he said." Nonsense. Anyone, and I mean anyone who has ever worked with typesetting will tell you that the likelihood of a 30 year old plus machine's output matching MS Word's default output to the freaking pica is astronomically poor -- even using the same type from the same foundry.

Just one more thing: it would appear that the new standard of journalism in the U.S., thanks to CBS, is "If it cannot be definitively disproven, it is true".
To: Thane_Banquo
How many experts do you know that would place their reputation on viewing a copy of someones signature and then saying it was a poor copy at that?

Matley and partner run a 'forensics expert witness for hire' firm.
He has to be careful with the CBS matter, as his own credibility is now at stake.

Yes. Several of the signatures appear different from 'known' Killian signatures.
[In another thread yesterday, someone posted images of about 6 Killian signatures. At least 2 on the 'CBS' documents appeared significantly and noticeably different from 'known' Killian signatures.]

No, but Matley's a dupe. Just because you can't identify the typeface (and this statement is doubtful) doesn't mean you can't definitively say that it couldn't have been produced on anything but a computer. On the other hand, Matley just may not think enough before speaking.
