I wish someone more erudite and eloquent that I would take on the task of composing the New Media Manifesto. Basically, a treatise that warns the Old Media of their impending doom (or need to change dratically to save themselves from irrelevancy). Something that challenges them with things like:

-We will check your facts if you won't -We'll look up the background of your supposed "non-partisan sources" and expose them -We'll pick apart the documents you rush in as proof

etc....

Were I gifted with such talent I would write it myself. I would nominate Lileks, Charles Johnson, maybe Glenn Reynolds?

I was talking to another FReeper regarding Rathergate yesterday. I said that in the past, CBS could have come with something like this and it might not have been until after the election before the fraud was discovered. Now, with the internet, it was only a couple of hours before their assertions were being blown out of the water. And I think it literally stunned Rather and SEE BS. I won't make any predictions of how long Rather will be on the job, but I get the sense that the big bosses at SEE BS are getting ready to throw him out. He stepped in it big time and they don't like the stink. His own "expert" witness said he only authenticated one document, not all four. It's looking grim for Danny Boy.

I agree, the internet has really arrived and changed the press and politics for the better. After I watched the the hack jobs the networks did on Goldwater and Reagan (Carter was known as the "Georgia Dirt Bomb"), it's a hopeful sign that a lie born in an agenda can be caught so quick, and be more embarrassing to the reporter than the target. Times are a changing, indeed.
