former National Guard commander who CBS News said had helped convince it of the authenticity of documents raising new questions about President Bush's military service said on Saturday that he did not believe they were genuine.
The commander, Bobby Hodges, said in a telephone interview that network producers had never showed him the documents but had only read them to him over the phone days before they were featured Wednesday in a "60 Minutes" broadcast. After seeing the documents on Friday, Mr. Hodges said, he concluded that they were falsified.
Mr. Hodges, a former general who spoke to several news organizations this weekend, was just the latest person to challenge the authenticity of the documents, which CBS reported came from the personal files of Mr. Bush's former squadron commander at the Texas Air National Guard, Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian, who died 20 years ago.
The memos indicated that Mr. Bush had failed to take a physical "as ordered" and that Mr. Killian was being pressured to "sugarcoat" Mr. Bush's performance rating because Mr. Bush, whose father was then a Texas congressman, was "talking to somebody upstairs."

Increasingly the consensus is that the memos are fake and now the 'story' is 'how can CBS defend it?'

CBS had the incredible reaction of saying they don't care what Hodges says now, they choose only to believe what they claim he said previously. CBS knows these copies came from the Kerry campaign and that is why they are stonewalling.
Yeah, but in true campaign hit piece form, they have to report the negative so it gets heard as much as possible; however, in this instance, I don't think it will hurt Bush much just like it didn't hurt Clinton or Bush in his other elections. On the other issue...yes, it is getting bad for CBS when one of their on collaberators for the Wed onslaught is jumping ship. Amazing how many news orgs reported the exact same thing on the same day. I hope CBS continues to suffer tremendously !

Since the (D)'s new talking points are:
1) CBS has faux docs, and Kerry has faux medals, ergo, SwiftVets are faux too (that's a quantum leap)
2) Everybody is slinging mud, so believe nothing (esp. the SwiftVets)
3) The subject on top of the heap is W's Tex ANG and not 85% of Kerry's fellow sailors who despise him.
This tactic will work best with their own base, for whom it is targeted, since the SwiftVets have eroded a noticeable chunk off of Kerry's base.

Current Vegas line on Rather's resignation date is 5-3 by 6/30/05, 5-2 by 12/31/04, and 3-1 by 10/31/04. I like the 12/31/04 odds and I might put a few bucks on that date.
But where in Senator Kerry's campaign organization? And did Senator Kerry personally approve of pulling off this hoax? These questions are very troubling because if we find out that a high-ranking official in the Kerry campaign concocted this stunt and/or Kerry personally approved it, it will essentially finish off the Kerry's chances in no time flat.
Mind you, it couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of people, though.

I checked the NYT site - that was the ONLY thing relating to the TANG 'story'. The grey lady has scuttled it!
I am furious with CBS. NOt only are they liars, but when I called their various offices they were rude. I see no reason to ever watch that station again.
If I have to camp out in front of BlackRock with a signboard, I don't want to see Dan Rather broadcast on election night.
