Anyone can be "unimpeachable" if they remain anonymous and their evidence is unavailable for review. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, so to speak.

CBS should be challenged hard on this shaky scheme. If the sources are "unimpeachable", then the evidence will surely survive independent investigation, right? If they refuse, then all they're selling is snakeoil. IIRC, snakeoil salesmen got run out of town on rails, tarred and feathered.

Excellent point. I suspect their reticence belies the fact that "unimpeachable" to them would be "laughable" to us.
(Remember...their current document expert's other claim-to-fame is vouching for the Vince Foster suicide note.)

Good question. Members of the Senate Armed Services Comm. come to mind...Bill Nelson, Hillary!, Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd (Mccain?). Chris Dodd was in the Air Force and Tom Daschle was a USAF officer. I know it's not his branch, but Ret.Adm. William Crowe would do anything for the dems...he's tag-teaming with Max Cleland on the Kerry tour these days.

Then again, Dan's unimpeachable source could be a janitor in Houston who "found" the "memos" in a dumpster behind Bush 41's house and passed them on to Shiela Jackson Lee.

I think the use of Marcel Matley (handwriting expert who also affirmed that Vince Foster's suicide note was authentic) is a big tip off to the source. I think someone related to the DNC or to Kerry (or both)

These are the source to Mapes/Rather.
As to who actually forged them...
(1) Young. College-aged. No experience with typewriters whatsoever. (rules out Heldt and probably Burkett).
(2) Good but not great knowledge about Bush's record. Made the Staudt mistake. (this also probably rules out Heldt).
(3) Probably accessed Heldt's records via the Internet. DoJ should Subpoena Heldt's ISP server logs for IP records. May be too late though--that information usually goes fast. And might be no good even if they had the recrods--these things are huge. Needle in haystack problem.

I just went to the Democratic Underground to see what they were saying. They claim that Hodges was the source and that he is back pedaling because Rove and Bush have threatened him. In addition they claim that Rather has used FOIA to pull the records of both Bush and the other flier who was grounded and found out that the other flier was grounded for using cocaine and that Bush must have been guilty also by association and that he is holding back that information for a later attack. These people are dangerously crazy.
