The Director of the Texas Air National Guard at the time President Bush served there said Sunday that Guard documents obtained by "60 Minutes" purporting to show dissatisfaction over his performance are "forged as hell."
"They're forged as hell," former Guard director Earl W. Lively told the Washington Times. "There's no way that [Bush's commanding officer] Jerry Killian would have written what they've come up with."
Lively was referring to documents aired by CBS news star Dan Rather on Wednesday, purporting to show that Bush's commander Lt. Col. Killian felt pressure from his own superior officer, Col. Walter "Buck" Staudt to "sugarcoat" Bush's record.
But Lively confirmed to the Times that Staudt had been honorably discharged in March 1972, nearly 18 months before the date of the forged Killian memos.
What a pleasure to see Rather twisting, oh so slowly, in the wind.

It gives me pleasure as well
HA! Can I steal that?
Now this is nice to go along with everyone else who has come forward to cast serious doubt on those 'memos' as well as Amy Barnes outright calling her father a 'liar' who 'wants to sell books and help Kerry'. WHERE ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE ON THE NEWS? SEEMS AS IF THE NETWORKS AND PAPERS WERE ALL OVER PRINTING BARNES STORY AND THESE MEMOS AS FACT yet they are nowhere near showing the other side of this and the fact there is so much evidence against these slanders against the President. Notice the difference between coverage of Kerry and Bush and see how the media continues to push the lies and not provide those who would speak and contradict what they are saying to attempt to discredit the President. The SwiftVets were getting attacked by the media and it's obvious the media doesn't want to provide a defense of George W. Bush and it needs to stop.
""Dan's a girl...Dan has the enthusiasm of a girl. There's a girl's soul lurking in him."

If there is a Lord in heaven, please please please let this be the downfall of Dan Rather!! I've disliked him for years!
There are a variety of pundits, teachers, and web sites that purport to be the guardians of professional journalism and keepers of the truth. Ethics gurus for the press. Poynter/Romensko come to mind. By and large they have yet to opine on Danny boy. Their silence is deafening.
Of course....the liberals-commies-liars....couldn't do any better than that......the little chicken $HITS....
WHAT DID RATHER KNOW AND WHEN DID HE KNOW IT?
Net result of Rathergate on behalf of Lurch, zero at best; more likely a minus (for both Kerry and Blather). Love it.
Yikes!!! This stuff is spreading like wildfire. First it's Arnold's "Girrlie-men"... now it's "a girl's lurking soul." Double Yikes... where do I go to get inoculated??? !!!
.
What all of you seem to be missing is that Danny boy just reads what he is told to read so changing him, having him fired or his resigning would only lead to the network putting a "talking head" in his place that would read what the network wants him to read so it doesn't matter if it is Danny boy or some other reader. The content won't change, only who is doing the reading is all that will change.
Since everyone in America can reproduce these memos precisely with their own computer, since CBS will be able to find no typed-document expert to come on-air to defend them, and since every other news organization is laughing at them, I'm almost certain that CBS will crack next week.
I think that Rather himself was setting that up on Friday. It's a bad situation but there is no one at CBS that can come on the air to defend this in any way and the story is not going away with Ivan. The really big issue will be: who foisted this on CBS? The strong assumption that Kerry and/or McAuliffe were behind this. The fact the McAuliffe pointed this at Karl Rove indicates that he already sees this as quite damaging to the DNC.
I just think that CBS needed the weekend to consider how they get out in front on this issue, to consider the criminal implications of this, and to decide how to give up thier sources.
Maybe they'll apologize.
1. All criticism of these documents is based on multiple generation copies that have been faxed and copied several times, which means the criticism is not valid.
2. We will not allow the first generation copies (or are they 2nd or 3rd generation copies?) we were given to be analyzed by any independent document expert.
3. But if any certifiable evidence is uncovered by anyone, we will investigate it.
In a way, it's a Catch 22.
