E-mail Number Three (of which I have only thetiniest bit of understanding, but which I suspect is even more bad news for Dan and the CBS crowd):
"-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----Hash: SHA1
Hi, Hugh.
My name is Paul Snively. I'm a software engineer and former Apple Computer employee. Specifically, I was employed by Apple Computer from 1989-1991, the years in which Apple invented TrueType font technology, shipped the first implementation of TrueType in Macintosh System Software 7.0, and licensed the TrueType technology to Microsoft. My personal involvement with TrueType, however, was limited to participating in a code review of the TrueType renderer for System 7.0.
Corky Cartwright, whom I've incidentally known of for a minimum of three years due to his involvement with the Scheme programming language and specifically the , is, of course, exactly correct in his observations regarding proportional font spacing and the likelihood of its applicability even via the IBM Composer circa 1973. The animated GIF of the Microsoft Word document overlaying the CBS-provided PDF is already quite convincing. However, it gets worse for CBS.
Microsoft uses TrueType font technology under license from Apple Computer. Apple Computer holds three patents related to TrueType: , , and , as described at . The salient fact is that _at least one of these patents covers technology that can affect the font's metrics_, as described at , which I quote in part here:
"Some small aspects of the TrueType specification being covered by several patents owned by Apple Computer, it is generally not possible to render TrueType glyphs exactly as they should without infringing on Apple's IP rights (without a license).
This explains that we've taken some special measures to deal with this problem:
First of all, a default build of the FreeType 2 sources will not use any of the patented techniques to render TrueType glyphs. You'll thus be safe to use it freely in all kinds of projects.
Unfortunately, this freedom comes at the price of sometimes less-than-ideal glyph quality, depending on the font design, and most surely different glyph metrics for a given font."
Thus, the Microsoft Word document/CBS PDF overlay exhibiting completely accurate character overlay strongly suggests that, at the very least,
the origin of the PDF document was a piece of word-processing software using an Apple-licensed TrueType implementation, a font technology, glyph-hinting process, patent, and license that didn't exist until 1989.
Please feel free to quote me on the air and/or on your web site. Best regards, Paul Snively
Hugh's other 2 e-mails are also damning to Rather and CBS.
Dan, I think it's over for you.
Deep doodoo for the Rat Rather.
(Loose translation----we don't care if the documents are forged, we like the story and are going to keep runing with it until we have no credibility in any forum and we have destroyed the name of our network)
And .... didn't Dan say that we should be looking beyond the question of validity of the documents? We should be looking at the content!! Yeesh!!!!!
Dan Rather, Americas' village idiot.
Not with Dan. He is continuing his stonewall with very limited hangout. He probably sees it as a "nothing to lose" proposition: Admit he foisted a fraud upon the American people or deny, deny, deny on the chance, however slim, that the issue may blow over.
"...going to keep runing with it until we have no credibility in any forum and we have destroyed the name of our network..."
It's time to ask CBS this: "What is Rather holding over the heads of some higher ups that they are willing to destroy CBS rather than risking their own careers. It is obvious now that Rather is being protected to the detriment of the shareholders of CBS." There is the criminality of investor fraud now underway at the Black Eye Network.
LOL! Yea, forget the problems of the authenticity of these documents, let's have him answer the IMPORTANT questions raised in them!
(is he on drugs?)
So he transformed the Underwood at Killians office temporarily on 4th May 1972 into an IBM PC with laser printer output.
I bet he didn't think he would cause all these problems for the dims.
Actually, it is a wait-and-see.
If the Rather controversy brings viewers (which CBS has been losing in droves), and that improves the Viacom bottom line, they will let Rather continue. When the Rather controversy shows signs of damaging the Viacom bottom line, Rather will be retired.
To quote Judge Judy, "Follow the money."
Dan and CBS will stonewall, because it is their least-bad option.
I wonder if it will finally come to this:
Judge's instructions to the jury:
"Ladies and gentlemen, please remember that even if the defendant has been proven to have been lying, it is just as important to consider the content of his lies as it is to consider the weight of the truth."
LOL
Typeface BUMPmark.
Quite right - thus far I see no impact on the share price, will be interesting to see what the next week produces.
Remember folks, CBS News is a business, the P&L carries the most weight.
"Actually, it is a wait-and-see."
I don't believe in wait -and-see. I believe in forcing the issue to the front so decisions to do what is right are made.
When does Dan get kicked to the curb? Dan needs to go DOWN.
Dan is a partisan, corrupt pr*ck. A great nation can't tolerate mendacity at this level. He needs to be destroyed by this.
Dan Rather..
I meant that it is a 'wait and see' from Viacom's perspective. They want to see how their bottom line is being impacted before the do anything for or against.
As for Rather's credibility, I agree that the pressure (from the 'new media' --that be us, hehehe) should stay on him.
Actually, it could be a very good business move. To date, no network is fully serving the DU/Michael Moore population. They have a chance to corner that market.
Dan Rather, Americas' village idiot.
"What is Rather holding over the heads of some higher ups that they are willing to destroy CBS rather than risking their own careers."
Yup, I agree with you folks completely Dan Rather has no shame.
What anoys and surprises me is that first it was 60 Minutes standing by the story, then it was CBS News standing by the story, and now it is the CBS Network that is standing by the story.
I can understand Rather being a jerk, I just find it hard to believe that the entire "network" wants to have its reputation sullied by this. But as suggested maybe he knows where some big skeletons in the closet are hidden at CBS.
"...pressure (from the 'new media' --that be us, hehehe) should stay on him."
Got it.
"AP"
I knew it! I knew there would come a time when the AP would finally give us the straight unvarnished truth of the world. Thanks for this link.
This is one of the many things that I find preposterous about this whole thing. I mean... if the documents were faked, then the content of the documents is also fake, right?
What am I missing here?
(if my italics worked, thanks for the html bootcamp to whoever posted it. I always wondered how everybody did that).
Not if the FBI gets involved. I think by the end of the week the technical arguments will be over. No one but idiots will support CBS. Certainly not professional forensic experts.
So then we will have a case of criminal forgery of a military document to influence a federal election. I suspect this is a tad illegal.
If democrats or news comentators continue pressing Bush on this he will ask the FBI to resolve the issue. Perhaps not soon, and probably not personally, but the RNC will eventually say enough, this is criminal.
It is to the pubbies advantage to spread the pain out over the longest possible time period.
Even more important, if the documents are fake, all of Rather's sources can be assumed to be liars.
With the overlaid images available of the MS Word version of the memos, someone could probably numerically estimate the likelihood of some rendering technique other that True Type coming up with such a precise match.
So even though the nominal Times Roman font was developed decades ago, for anything other than True Type to render such a close match -- every curl, space, kern and all the other micro features -- is statisically nearly impossible.
Which means nothing if you are rather biased and really, really, really want it to be true!
Anyway, how about exactly one military document example from the 70's generated on anything but a military-issue typewriter.
But I thought that all of Rather's sources were already assumed to be... right... nevermind.
Let me amend the previous link. AP's official website can be found here. I apologize to WWN for comparing them with this sorry bunch.
On the left: Janine Cooper is an artist and a friend of mine. I hired her to paint portraits of the chrononauts I described in Time Travelers From Our Future. Janine got her inspiration from her own subconscious, not from photos or movies. Traksa told me that he telepathically directed her in each of the portraits, especially this one -- Traksa himself. The actual photographs of Traksa and the three other time travelers groups presented in my book Time Travelers From Our Future are available. Collect all four time traveler art magnets for $3.00 each (including postage & handling) or four for $10.00. Jannine Cooper's original artwork also is available. For a full color book of Janine Cooper's oil paintings, please send $10.00 check or money order to: Janine Cooper, P.O. Box 801931, Santa Clarita, CA 91380
"Let me amend the previous link. AP's official website can be found here."
LOL (Although I liked the original link better).
My brother and I categorically deny even knowing Mr. Rather and thoroughly resent your scurillous accusations!
You two have been busted! LOL
Why aren't the republicans screaming about this and if the morning talk show ignored it was didn't the republicans that were guests bring it up.
Ellen looks like a rat, sorry but she does
It is all a very clever tie-in for an upcoming episode of Stargate SG-1 , where Dan Rather will make a guest appearance.
This has been bothering me as well. I expected that even if no one at CBS news would stand against Rather, somewhere farther up the corporate chain there would be somebody with self-preservation instincts who would take steps to toss Rather overboard before he could do any more damage.
The only thing I can figure is that the corporate lawyers have told them that the damage Rather has already done is so bad that there is nothing to gain by trying to get out from under and their only chance is to try to whether the storm and hope that they can avoid indictment.
I think that they will succeed unless somebody in the justice system has balls enough to take this to a Grand Jury.
Did anybody who has an Apple try to do an ovelay like we have
seen in MS word?
Let's face it. There is no more room in the coffin for any more nails. The Navy's complaining that it's skewing their Magnetic Anomaly Detectors already.
Now that's funny.
Ironic how Kerry-supporting, Bush-bashing documents could be refuted because of patents and technology developed by Apple Computers... whose CEO supports John Kerry and the Democratic Party.
