This was probably a private prank that was circulating within the Kerry campaign, and was slipped to Dan Rather with a breathless explanation of "These just surfaced!"
That wily old catfish Dan rose to the bait, and swallowed the story hook, line and sinker. Funny, you wouldn't think he would be caught so easily, but then, pickings had been poor lately, and he was a little hungry.
Wolf Blitzer was probably aware of the same "story", but he can still show a little native caution.
The Kerry campaign core people probably did not set out to end the career of Dan Rather, and they surely had no intention in stepping into water that was over their head, but they are amateurs, and they were dealing with sharks that had just been introduced to their campaign (Begala and Carville). The sharks had no sense of loyalty to anyone other than the "Former Occupant of the Oval Office, 1993-2001", for whom they were doing the hatchet work on what remains of Kerry's credibility,
With friends like these....
This statement right here negates any intelligence in this article.
Whoa! Obviously, you didn't click on that little red link at the top of the article & , at the very least, scan the article. It really is a good idea to hear a guy out before you attack the messenger. This is the best & most exhaustive article deconstructing the memos (from a technical perspective) that I have seen.
garylmoore (Repeat: They made a mistake, they didn't count of George W. Bush.)
Did you read the article? It's incredible. Believe it or not, there are some principled people who have not gotten into politics enought to be involved, yet are experts and honest in their fields.
I hate to say it folks but this story is fading fast. The ONLY net covering it is FOX, and they're NOT covering it from the perspective that the documents are proven fakes. The media spin on this at this point in time SHOULD be, "Who faked the documents and who knew about it?" It should be a 24/7 drum beat. But it's not.
FOX is our only hope and for some reason they aren't taking it on the way it should be. This is like the Klinton years all over again.

Your attitude reflects badly on FR. The article, and it's author, methodically destroy any possibility that the CBS memoes can be authentic.
For you information, the author was on the staff of the CompSci department at my alma mater during my undergraduate tenure there, and he holds a PhD from that institution, which is ranked typically among the top two or three Comp Sci departments in the US.
I would sincerely appreciate it if you would cease making knee-jerk remarks on FR which the DU crowd will then use as evidence of how stupid all Freepers are.

I was commenting on his remark about our President and I don't think that it comes anywhere near a knee-jerk remark on FR, and by the way all Freepers are not stupid, now that is a knee-jerk remark which I would sincerely appreciate it if you would cease making remarks like that.
