The 32 hostage takers were not Chechens but members of Al Qaeda cells, Arabs and natives, known locally as 'Wahhabis.' (after the austere religion of Saudi Arabia)
To reach Beslan, they first transited Ingushetia, which forms a wedge between North Ossetia and Chechnya.
There, the terrorist gang was joined by a handful of Ingushe terrorists, along with their Chechen commander, Magomet Yevloev, nicknamed 'Magas.'
However, Magas did not mastermind the operation. His controller was a Wahabbi, who has not been identified, but whose voice was heard intoning Koranic verses on the videotapes broadcast later.
He too came under the orders of the two new chiefs of Al Qaeda's Saudi contingent in Chechnya, who are also known only by their noms de guerre of 'Abu Hafs' and 'Abu Hajir.'

"Putins reaction to Beslan was identical to that of President George W. Bush immediately after the September 11 al Qaeda attacks on New York and Washington, to hit out at the terrorists and destroy them in their lairs.Perhaps Putin now wishes he had been more cooperative with President Bush. It's not too late to join forces."The Russian rulers compulsion is even greater given that those lairs are inside his own country."
"Putin has gone to great lengths to pin the Beslen school siege on Chechen separatists. However, according to our sources, this outrage was al Qaedas free and clear."Yes. President Bush has gone to great lengths to insist that we are at war with "terrorists" not Muslims. That's wise and prudent.
It's way past time for Russia and the U.S. to strengthen their alliance in the war against these "terrorists", and in other ways, politically and economically, and, of great importance, against the quagmire of decadence that has afflicted Europe and the Democrat enclaves of America.
Perhaps now Putin is in a frame of mind more conducive to facing reality.
Facing reality be damned--Kerry, of course, if elected, would join forces with the Europeans to conduct a more sensitive dispute with these disgruntled persons and seek to find what on earth we have done to make them so...annoyed. If you think Al Gore would have been a disaster as President of the U.S.--imagine what John Kerry would be like!
Laura Ingraham on the radio with Bill Gertz talking about this now!
Perhaps the sympathy of the American people for the people of Russia will encourage Bush to be more cooperative with Putin.
Russia is one of the single most important allies that the U.S. could have. A strong alliance with Russia must be a top priority.
This is an excellent point - and quite true. I suspect the main reson Putin sided with Chirac and Schroeder was the insistance of the Bush State Dept. - in another continuation of Clinton policy - in advocating Chechen independence, along with their refusal to classify the Chechen terrorists as terrorists. An extremely valid criticism. The butchers at Beslan didn't scream "free Chechnya" when they siezed the school, they shouted "Allahu Akhbar."
Israel's case is similar. Despite a 4-year campaign of murder, the Bush State Dept. continues to insist on a Palestinian state. By their actions over the last few years, along with the widespread support and affirmation of the majority living in the West bank and Gaza - even celebrations of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the Arabs have forfeited any moral claim to this territory.
Yes, Two major issues we can take up with President Bush, by freeping if need be, AFTER he wins the election, are 1) Close our borders and put the illegal back into illegal aliens, and 2) Let our fellow WOT fighting countries follow the Bush doctrine and protect themselves the way we are. Support openly the rights of Israel and Russia to play "away" games with their terrorists, too.
