Limbaugh stirs Democrats’ angst over Forces Radio
The Hill ^ | September 14, 2004 | Hans Nichols

The escalating battle for the votes of U.S. armed forces personnel is stoking congressional Democrats’ efforts to end what they see as a right-wing tilt on the Armed Forces Radio and Television Services (AFRTS).

They are focusing on the broadcast of Rush Limbaugh’s popular daily talk show and say that its inclusion without a left-leaning counterweight violates Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines to provide balanced political programming to active-duty military personnel in 177 countries.

Believing that the alleged rightward bias will push military voters overseas to cast absentee ballots for Republicans, the Democrats in Congress are urging the chairmen and ranking members on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees to require the AFRTS to offer additional liberal programming for balance.

Rush spoke of this some time ago and as I remember, he explained that his program was included because of an overwhelming popular vote by the GI's. The soldiers were given a list of programs and it was a check off kind of thing that included NPR as well as others.

Probably, after all he is a CBS/Viacom anti-Bush propagandist. Howard the "rebel" is a multimillionaire company hack apparently. I would bet that Rush stays on AFR, but it amazes me how the left constantly tries to stomp out their critics first amendment rights.

Now that Rush is an "unpaid" adviser (/sarcasm) to the Bush/Cheney campaign they'll be screaming to high heaven. I've already seen some Liberals who actually fell for his monologue today.

Yeah, replace Rush with Al Franken. Having to listen to that boring, leftist twaddle should boost the GOP military vote up to 100%.

Yeah, we can give them the 3-6 AM slot. They'll get the same listenership that they would at 3-6 in the afternoon, but thye won't irritate the troops.

I don't get it, they are already overbalanced to the left by being forced to listen to "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition".

Why can't balance be restored by say, Armstrong Williams?

The problem is that the Democrats think that this type of programming is just about in the middle and that anything to the right of that is, well, to the right of it. That means that there is no liberal voice to them. Unfortunately, they do not see the mainstream media for what it is.

Besides, the Armed Forces requested Rush, therefore they are not influenced by the show - the delivery of the program was influenced by their pre-existing political affiliations. That is why it was requested. The Dems need to focus their attention anywhere but the active volunteer military for purposes of getting votes.

It seems the left is loony enough.

Here is their schedule. Other than Limbaugh (who gets only one hour!) Dr. Dobson, and Dr. Laura, I don't see any conservative hosts. The news is CNN and AP (both liberal mouthpieces), NPR, USA Today, - unbelievably - Dan Rather.

They need Rush to restore their sanity after AP and Blather.

I was overseas during the Clinton years and they do have their balance .... we called it the "Slants and Slurs" (it was the Stars and Stripes during WWII).
