The day CBS News got 'blogged' down
Newsday ^ | James Pinkerton

Posted on 09/14/2004 2:16:53 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Sept. 9, 2004, will be remembered as a paradigm-shifting day in media history. That was the day the "blogosphere" took down CBS News.

....But if the bloggers have power, it's because they form a robust intellectual marketplace, in which assertions must prove themselves before a jury of cyber-peers. In the words of James T. Smith, of critical-thinker.blogspot.com, "The blogosphere is the people." To be sure, the marketplace can make mistakes, but on the whole, like democracy itself, the more folks participating, the better the functioning.

But this democratization of the media is bad news - for those who liked it the old way, the top-down way.

New media's debut with Dan Rather rightly having egg all over his face.

How ironic that Rather, the anti-American sympathizer of suicide bombing terrorists, himself becomes one.

Target: CBS News

And we owe it all to Buckhead, the post heard 'round the world. I hope his original post is archived for posterity; there should be a place for it in the Smithsonian.

While Rather's strange defense of his story is partially due to his partisanship and arrogance, there's another factor that I'll bet is in the mix. It's ratings!

Before last Thursday night, I had not watched a CBS Evening News with Dan Rather in at least 10 years. Now I've watched and Tivo'd the last three. Dan's ratings must be going through the roof.

Would Dan try to stretch this story out as long as possible just for ratings? Of course, he would. At this point, he's got nothing more to lose.

What's up with this quote from the article?

---"The basic storyline - that strings were pulled to get Bush into the Guard - is not really in dispute."---

I have seen a number of reports that suggest that it was not necessary to get "special treatment" to volunteer to become a pilot. In fact, it is a myth that it was difficult to enlist in a Guard or Reserve Unit at all during that time. No one has claimed that Senator Kerry received any special help, even though he was a son of priviledge. I enlisted in the USNR in 1970. No waiting, signed the paper, and took the oath, all on the same day.

Why do jouranlists always have to take a cheap shot?

Cripes, I don't know if I can hang on until Novemeber 2.

THE BIG QUESTION !!!!

Why doesn't CBS provide both sides and allow the viewers to conclude - "rather" than whitewashing the story?

They've excluded Killian's son and spouse, plus the folk who have proven the docs are forged (most of the USA and Canada).

It goes to motive which is partisan.

It boggles the mind to ponder what "might have been" if we'd been around during the O.J. trial.

Jim has one of the worst jobs in the world, and I guess he is illustrative of the point that people will do any thing to be on TV.

Jim who is 7 or 8 feet tall is paired with the mindless JAP Ellen Ratner who's feet don't touch the floor when she sits in a chair. The Fox and Friends spot is "The long and short of it".

Having to listen to that wench will certainly lead to an early death for Jim.

It doesn't help that he has to sit in on Newswatch with Neil Gabler either.

A local talk news commentator remarked the other day that Rather not only had "egg" on his face, he had the whole chicken's "backside" (my word, not his, LOL) on his face.

But as the morning papers thought they were done for the day, the "blogosphere" - the motley and unorganized crew of Internet publishers and activists, numbering in the millions - went to work.

Motley? We're motley? I'm not motley.

I would agree except that I've been taping the show purely to get a list of sponsors. I don't know if even CBS wants that of negative attention on their sponsors.

Sept. 9, 2004, will be remembered as a paradigm-shifting day in media history. That was the day the "blogosphere" took down CBS News.

The stage was all set for the media to attempt take down Bush on the guard issue, howevere a funny thing happened. The negative press that was reserved for Bush got hi-jacked by the truth and the story has become the bias at CBS and their reliance on forged documents.
