Was Dan duped?
MSNBC ^ | September 14,, 2004 | Pat Buchanan

Posted on 09/14/2004 8:15:37 AM PDT by Kaslin

Dan Rather, successor to Walter Cronkite as anchor of CBS News, may be about to close out his career on a banana peel.

Last Wednesday, Rather launched a "60 Minutes" pre-emptive strike against the president. Rather's charges: Bush got into the National Guard through pull, was an insubordinate officer who refused to take the medical exam to keep flying and used clout to prevent his being disciplined.

Last paragraph in the editorial

Indeed, if these memos turn out to be fakes, CBS and Rather will be guilty of, at least, having been played for fools. At worst, they could be convicted in the court of public opinion of collusion in a plot to bring down a president— a plot into which they were lured by a blinding bias against George W. Bush.

Was Dan duped?

That's a rhetorical question, right?

Dan is in deep doo-doo. He should join forces with Jayson Blair and make a movie.

Of course, they're all victims from the party of victims and the big bad Republicans are out to get them. hahaha - fools. The Democratic party depends on frogring and maintaining an aura of victimhood. Without forged victims there would be no reason for the Democratic party.

If Dan Rather was duped then he would be using that "out" to save his journalistic integrity. His continued support for the authenticity of the clearly fraudulent memos says that he was complicit in the fraud.

I don't believe for one second that Dan was duped. He was a participant. Logically, had he been duped, wouldn't a responsible journalist have outed the source quickly to keep a shred of credibility for himself and his employer?? Is he protecting someone, sure...himself first. What's funny, is all the little CBS's worker bees are going down with him. Do I feel sorry for them? No. They could've left the rathole anytime. Can't tell me employees didn't see the politics played by CBS... Just like Enron and Arthur Anderson, a corrupt empire must be burnt to the ground (figuratively speaking).

Yes, this was a hoax. The documents were faked.

It weems everyone knows this but Dan Rather. He willingly went along with these because of his blinding hatred for Bush, now he has ended up helping Bush and hurting Kerry, how fitting and how ironic and how funny.

When the whole thing was first breaking, a lawyer on FR (Congressman Billybob?) indicated that CBS could come forward (early) and seek the truth of the matter. However, if they delayed in such an effort, they quickly crossed-over and became accessories to the fraud.

I don't know if that sort of thinking is what a courtroom would follow, but it makes sense to me.

Dan is stonewalling. Dan is not helping anyone find out the truth. Dan is (now) part of the fraud. Dan should be prosecuted. And CBS should lose its license from the FCC.

If that were true we would have all had our noses rubbed in it by CBS by now.

A more direct phrasing of the question would be "how stupid is Dan Rather?"
Personally, I don't think he was stupid enough to actually believe in the authenticity of these documents.
He was stupid enough, though, to believe that his authority and credibility; inherited from the arch-fiend of activist media, Cronkite; would be great enough to overcome any doubts.
I think he simply under-estimated the power of new media, and over-estimated his own.
In this, he displayed the same weakness as other powerful and sinister figures throughout history, the fatal arrogance of hubris.

“...of collusion in a plot to bring down a president— a plot into which they were lured by a blinding bias against George W. Bush.”

Buchanan is a vile bastard. This last paragraph is all that counts. It's what should be on the mind of ALL Americans!

Other than this... Buchanan can go back to the hole he crawled out of!

That will be the DNC talking points. McAwful alluded to that last week -- Karl Rove did it!

This is going to be great sport to watch!
