Your advice is filed in the advice bin.
This is absolutely the correct move and I hope this Committee is up to it.
It is absolutely the incorrect move. Congress makes laws. If there is an existing law that has been broken then the matter belongs in the hands of the police and the courts. This country doesn't need any more Ministers of Speech, McCain has that job all locked up.
And we sure the hell don't need any more laws or government. This matter should be handled exactly the way it is being handled. By American citizens exercising their rights to bring pressure on CBS, a private enterprise.
Thank God for giving the founders the wisdom to write the Constitution and the foresight to understand that folks of all stripes would try to abridge rights and expand government in perpetuity.
I disagree.
Those memos are a violation of law and no one is doing anything.
If a crime caught on camera is good for an anti-crime politician, so be it; but to keep playing the tape and never attempting to catch the criminal just to provide political help is a bit too uncaring about the fact that there's a victim and a criminal out there.
I think I do see the entire picture. The truth will out without help from Republican congressmen. A heavy handed approach at this point will hurt Bush's re-election effort. Republican politicians should tread lightly, make whatever jibes they think appropriate, but generally keep their hands off.
I have to agree with those who don't think this will help our cause for the moment. Those dastardly Republicans and their hearings will become the story. Best to lay low for now. I'm for starting hearings after November 3rd. Parley
In spite of the Freedom of the Press, etc., I don't see how CBS can avoid some criminal prosecution in this matter. Fraud? Would the Bush people have to bring a suit for something to happen or are criminal activities involved in this deception? It may be that they will have to reveal their sources in order to keep themselves legitimate. (I can see the martyrdom of Rather, going to jail in chains as he refuses to reveal his sources--but if money in involved, CBS might cave.)
What is the crime? I printed and signed the old, non-operational orders here at home (well, not really, but could have). Am I a forger now?
I'm still looking for the law that CBS has broken, other than (arguably) the FCC licensing requirement to serve the public. And I keep coming back to Air America. I don't mind them on the air, and CBS could be a TV equivalent. So what? Let 'em have it.
I would like to see a Congressional hearing on this matter complete with a requirement that Dementia Dan release his sources. I cannot believe how much the MSM is in the tank for this guy.
If mr. Kerry would release all of his records and let the voters decide, this would be a moot point. I personally have faith in the intelligence and the morality of the American public. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the framers of The Constitution were counting on both.
I really like Cox.
Wasn't he the one who wrote the report on how Clinton sold national security secrets to the Chinese?
Okay. Let's play this out, hypothetically. Hearings are convened for next week, maybe the week after. CBS comes in, Dan Rather comes in. They have stood by their story, the documents are authentic, in the face of ridicule that would sink an honest man. Congress tells them to divulge source. They refuse, on advice of counsel. And now we have a real circus. And the election is still coming. And the Republicans are "being mean" to CBS, who is, by most accounts, the plitical equivalent of the National Enquirer, i.e., irrelevant. ANd if the Republicans are this ham handed with an irrelevant political voice, just imagine how heavy handed they will be with honest dissent.
Your mileage may vary.
If there is criminal wrongdoing here, editorials by columnists and posts on message boards will not get the criminal ball rolling.
A Congressional look into this matter could stimulate a criminal investigation.
I, like you, want a limited government and fewer laws, and want police action on existing laws, but this is one case that can help expose CBS and the RATs for the lying scum they are.
All of this is a negative for traitor Kerry and the more it is in the news, the better.
I don't see how that's possible. Republicans are trying to get the press to stop being silent.
Who is your "trusted source" Dan?
Tell us Dan.
Why won't you speak, Dan?
Cox apparently didn't get the memo about only the jackass party having the right to launch investigations.
Yes.
No you don't, you want Congress sticking its nose in where it doesn't belong because you think it accrues to our political advantage.
The same Congress that abridged the 1A with CFR.
Thanks but no thanks, I'll stick with the Constitution, limited government and an expansive 1A in all of its clauses.
Regards.
We're on the same side. I would love to see the sweat pouring off of Rather as he sits in front of an investigating committee, giving false testimony (the only kind he would know how to give.)
Heard this on the way home. I like it! Hugh reminded us to call members of the committee or our own congresscritters. Unfortunately if you live in a (blue) rogue state...It'll be like spitting in the ocean. But we must carry on the Buckhead tradition!
I don't like what the DNC and CBS are doing. And I have the same reaction of revulsion that you do. It is equally FRAUD when Terry McAuliffe says GWB was AWOL. It is equally FRAUD when Michael Moore makes a "documentary" with deceptive cuts and edits.
The forgery is about a part of GWB's life that he asserts is irrelevant. He hasn't brought it up, he hasn't lied about it. Kitty Kelly's assertions about GWB use of cocain have as much credibility as this CBS/DNC crap.
