The New York Times reports some dramatic new developments, buried in the second half of their story.
But one person at CBS, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed a report in Newsweek that Bill Burkett, a retired National Guard officer who has charged that senior aides to then-Gov. Bush had ordered Guard officials to remove damaging information from Mr. Bush's military personnel files, had been a source of the report. This person did not know the exact role he played. Mr. Burkett declined to return telephone calls to his home near Abilene, Tex. His lawyer, David Van Os, on Tuesday repeatedly refused to say in a telephone interview whether the officer had played a part in supplying the disputed documents to CBS. Mr. Van Os said "the real story is and should be, where was George Bush?" and that Mr. Burkett "is not the proper object of attention." Mr. Van Os called Mr. Burkett "a man of impeccable honesty who would not permit himself to be a party to anything fake, fraudulent or phony."
Also:
Officials at CBS News said on Tuesday that they would at some point in the day provide the name of a document expert who expressed confidence in the records' authenticity before the report was broadcast. But they did not do so, and Ms. West declined to say why. Also, the Times reports that Lt. Col. Jerry B.Killian's son, Gary, doubts his father's secretary's assertion that the documents are fake but accurately reflect Jerry Killian's views at the time. He has some nice and civil things to say about Marian Carr Knox, despite his assertion she is mistaken. "She's a sweet old lady, but she's wrong and it didn't happen,'' he said. "I always thought well of her, and I know my dad would have also, but she's a sweet old lady.''
Nice find. I thought I read some disturbing things about this officer. I will do a search.

Burkett alleged that over the next four months Goodwin, Taliaferro and Meador willfully and maliciously refused to provide Dyess with clearance or confirmation of his duty status thereby denying him access to military medical care. Burkett alleged that these three individuals' conduct was "so completely beyond and outside any military authority or discretion as to have been outside the scope of military duty, outside any military duty, outside any military capacity, and not incident to military duty." Burkett alleged that they "acted purely as individuals, not as military officers, albeit pretending to have military authority and abusing their offices through such pretense in order to willfully and maliciously wreak havoc upon [Burkett's] life."
It seems that "crazy man" Burkett has been set up from the beginning to be the fall guy in this little caper. Pass the Thorazine, please.
Burkett had been discredited years ago.
ONE MUST ASK...why CBS would trust a man who, had two nervous break downs and had unsuccessfully tried to sue the Military, as their key source.
This dude got busted years ago for lying on this.
He has never provided credible documents.
I read that she was 80. Someone here called her gray throat.
I reported that last night, but everybody told me we had to be careful not to libel him.
Enjoy the ride! I did a search on this fella yesterday and the view wasn't pretty.
Something about that story in which he claims he was standing next to a trash can with some docs lying atop its contents, George Costanza-like, that had to be eating away at him over the years....
"A" source of "the" report? No secret Burkett and others were contacted at least.
Burkett is the fall-guy to kill the story, he'll be portrayed as a psychotic loser, and there will be no further investigation, and the MSM will proclaim, when all is said and done, that they put this to rest.

At first glance, wow.
Not even a non-denial denial.
But it could be as simple as the lawyer doesn't have
specific instructions on the topic.
I think she was the DNC ace in the hole on this. Who else could provide such good "first hand" knowledge on Jerry Killian?
Surely not his wife or son because they are "partisan".
Everyone knows from reading Redbook that a "superior" is more confiding in his secretary than his wife.
She's 86. I also find it interesting that she's spouting fairly current DNC talking points. Wonder if Terry McA talked to her first?
And he has stated on the record several times he has no such documents.
So if it's him, did CBS get it from him directly or through an intermediary such as moveon.org or the Kerry campaign?
The plot thickens.
They should make a movie of this someday.
