How fast can the Army Corps of Engineers put together a bridge?

Descending from the crest of the Escambia Bay bridges over the navigational channel below toward Exit 17/U.S. 90. This is the first U.S. 90 encounter of Interstate 10 in 175 miles since last intersecting the highway west of Tallahassee. U.S. 90 itself in east Pensacola is designated Scenic Highway, a name for which it attains along the bluffs of the westshore of Escambia and Pensacola Bays. Photo taken by 12/06/03.

US 98 runs along the coast and may take a while to clear

Much of US 98 can't be cleared because it doesn't exist anymore...TWC had some of the first pics from the beach. It wasn't merely underwater, it was literally washed away entirely in many places.

Is that the west bound or eastbound lane? I am guessing it is westbound.

Both

Hurricane Ivan has destroyed a quarter-mile section of the eastbound section of the bridge. A chunk of the eastbound roadway fell into the water. The westbound section is still standing but is damaged.

Is that what they call "Three-Mile bridge" or is that another one?

Displays the power of the water doesn't it......awesome. My litte sis had went down to New Orleans and got caught in the evac and said it was a mess . Took her close to 12 hours to go 4 miles at one point . Glad such a jam wasn't on that bridge in this pic.

If I were the driver of that yellow cab sitting there you'd see by white reverse lights on and a plume of smoke from spinning tires.

Do you see thoes street signs on the bridge, looks like they were pancaked shut in the direction the hurricane was blowing. I'm surprised the semi did not blow off the bridge!

US 80 and 84 appear to have sections closed as well, as well as many local roads. You probably can bypass the problem on 84 by staying on I-85 to Opelika, take 280 to Columbus, and then hit Z. Cross -country traffic should probably try I-20.

Note I-10 is blocked in Alabama as well, along with 90 and 98.

Here's a list of Alabama road closures and reasons:
http://www.dot.state.al.us/closures/

Mississippi hurricane road closures:

Florida doesn't seem to care about posting information where it can be found. FlDOT links to the state disaster page, which links back to FlDot traffic count info.

I totally agree, but why was the bridge not shut down, as others have asked?

Tornadoes are one thing that one can't prepare for short of a basement. But when its flooded.....eeeek ! Money , lack of it, made most of these folks stay. As one talking head said earlier today, just get in the car and drive to the NW till a tank full of gas is used, refuel, stay overnight in the car if ya have to and drive back the next day if ya have no place to go stay with friends or family. Road trip !

Stay Safe

Looking at the 4th picture, it looks like the other lane is being closed by the police, with a semi being held up. That guy ought to be thanking the cops for saving his life.

How would you close it?

Put up some barricades which would blow away? Park a heavy truck across the roadway which someone would drive into in the heavy rain? Tell a cop to stand out there in 100 mph wind until he blew away or got hit by a wind driven object?
