Texas Republicans had split in 1976 between President Gerald Ford and rival Ronald Reagan. As 1980 approached, and the elder Bush maneuvered for the GOP nomination, local Reaganites didn't want to boost his namesake son. Some "actively worked against George W.," says Bush backer Ruth Schiermeier. When he won the GOP primary, well-known conservative activist Paul Weyrich and others intervened privately for the Democrat, state Sen. Kent Hance, according to Hance campaign manager Ricky Knox.
