So why aren't they? The only reasonable conclusion is that the source -- or trail of sources -- is even more incriminating than the fake documents. Why else would Heyward and Rather allow the CBS news division to commit slow, public suicide? There's the question, indeed.

...the over-the-top intros: ''Bob Schieffer, one of the best hard-nosed reporters in the business, has been working his sources. What have you managed to uncover for us, Bob?'', after which Bob reads out a DNC press release.Priceless! Hey, Freedude, FYI, it is customary to put Mark Steyn's name in the title, like so:

I got a chuckle of out of Mark Steyn's Oliver Cromwell tag line. However, I beg to differ with him. I want Danron to stay right where he is, so we remember who liberals are. If he goes we learn nothing from this entire sorry episode. There are good reasons to have him around, the principal one being Danron is a living exhibit of what liberalism has become today. I say for the sake of America, keep him at CBS!!!

Forget about Rather. He is totally discredited now. Lets trackdown the sources.

You'd think CBS would be mad as hell to find whoever it was who stitched them up and made them look idiots. So why aren't they? Just as Watergate led not only to CReEP but to the FBI and CIA, Rathergate leads no doubt to the DNC, the Kerry campaign and CBS and Viacom top management with tentacles into other media corporations. There are ten Pulitzers waiting for the inside whistle blower, assuming he also brings down the communist Pulitzer committee.

It really seems now that the most sensational, lurid, and damningly partisan theory for the provenance of the forgeries is the correct one: they originated with a lunatic in Texas, but they came to Rather from the DNC and John Kerry is directly involved.
Revealing this now would destroy whatever slight chance Kerry still has of a comeback, and possibly lead to the first pre-election withdrawal by a major party Presidential candidate in American history.
Rather and CBS do not want to go down in history for this. Not only would their fellow lefties curse them to the dying breath of liberalism, but they would become a laughingstock till the end of time. A thousand years from now, "rather" might be a common lower-case noun for a pompous incompetent who misses some obvious flaw in his plans.
