Wow this makes 63 quakes in the same general location in the last 14 hours (Over half of those in the last hour).

6 4.0 or higher --- 3 5.0 or higher in the last 40 minutes.

Nothing but coyotes and jackrabbits out there. Maybe a few four wheelers too.

And 3000+ year old Bristlecone Pines.

Are these "swarms" of aftershocks of something prior?

Aren't the bristcone pines up in the White Mountains? Not far away.

Not really, in this case these aren't an aftershock of anything, just a swarm of small-medium quakes. These can go on for days and weeks, and simply stop, without anything really major happening; and then happen again years later. This area has apparently had swarms like this before.

Hey folks, hope things are quieting down there.

I'm in Las Vegas, since 1983. Avid amateur student of the things that make the ground move.

I know the history of YellowStone, but finding out about Mono Lake - Long Valley area really excited me. Wish I had more time to devote to the studies....

Take care,

Actually the 4,500 year plus Bristlecone pines are about 60 miles south/east of the epicenter of the three large quakes.

Yes! And several 4+ and 3+ aftershocks in between not counting the 40 plus smaller aftershocks.

WOW. That's a high strength swarm. I'm in Bakersfield and my dad is down from Reno visiting. He came down 395 to get here.

Multiple large earthquakes in very short periods of time are not unheard of in the Mammoth Lakes Region.

US 395 runs right by my house. The quakes were centered east of Lee Vining (on 395) and Mono Lake near the Nevada border.

True.

But it does mean that something is "afoot", below the feet.
